From 2001's Vespertine. Yeah, Bjork's weird as all hell, but she's also proven one of the most creative, imaginative artists of the 21st century and a pioneer of personal and emotional electronic music. Read up on this lady; her influence permeates everything you love, from Baths to Radiohead.

Beck - Get Real Paid

From an underrated 1999 LP called Midnite Vultures. I consistently rank Beck among my absolute favorite musicians of all time. He pretty much just does what he wants (like make an album of soul and R&B experiments right on the heels of a folky one, right on the heels of one produced by the Dust Brothers...), and IT'S ALWAYS GOOD. Like here, he somehow managed to turn Kraftwerk-y techno-pop into some weird funked-out gangsta shit. If that doesn't constitute an astronomical level of swag, I don't know what does.

Seasons (Purpp Cobain Lean House Edit) - Six Foe

Lean House is basically chopped and screwed house music. Real chilled out, slowed-down vibes for those winter nights spent sipping lean and zonin'. Check out a mix of the stuff HERE.

Keeping It Moving - A Tribe Called Quest

A jam from the masters. Tribe can do no wrong, especially when the man behind the decks is none other than the legendary J. Dilla. This beat breaks necks.

No Day Massacare - Mr. Oizo

A cut from Analog Worms Attack, another example of why 1999 was cooler than you. While this track is actually far from monophonic **pushes glasses up nose**, it still packs quite a dark, funky wallop. Patkins will like this. Copped from Apes With Barrels, who love Oizo with all their hearts.

Our favorite MC tearing up some FlyamSam shit. Can't wait for this cat to put more shit out, he's got some serious lyrical talent.

Hot on the heels of Thursday's brilliant experimentations with genre and sonic atmosphere, it looks like Abel Tesfaye & co. are looking ever forward. There's shit going down here production-wise that blows my mind.

And yet, miraculously, the song itself still manages to give you just "What You Need" (sorry) – a dark, driving, chopped up beat; an eerie vocal melody, distorted and pitch-shifted to hell and back; then, of course, there's Tesfaye's trademark lyrical menace.

The content is familiar, to say the least: some poor girl gets sucked into a dark underground world of sex, drugs, and fame, where power games and depraved hedonism are the norm. But with every track the Weeknd put out, the menace of Tesfaye's lyrics seems to be reflected more and more in the sonic atmosphere of the songs themselves, and I'll be bold to say that this might be the most beautifully paranoid and dramatic track they've put out so far. You actually feel scared listening to it, and I feel that most music doesn't do that nearly enough nowadays.

Keep your eyes on the OVOXO, kids. Toronto's doing seriously big things right now, and Drake's new album has the Weekend all over it.

Alabaster Bodyworlds - Born Gold

The original is from their first (and only) proper album, Neon Graveyard. While I love the original's melancholy murk and distortion, this version glitters with a bit more hi-fi. It seems to draw primarily from their live performance of the song, or so I gleaned from the last few times I've seen them.

Anyways, go "Like" or "Follow" or "Bookmark" all of the relevant pages at their website, and if you're as die-hard a fan as us, you'll pre-order their debut LP, Bodysongs, on Hovercraft/Crash Symbols. It's looking like 50% classic Gbl and 50% new shit, so I'm super excited (and wondering if the old tracks will come similarly revamped...). Comes out officially on 9/20, though if you pre-order you get the mp3s on 9/9! They're currently out-selling Bon Iver, Washed Out, and Panda Bear, which is pretty fkn boss. Radar Detector - Darwin Deez

I have been getting into Darwin Deez in a BIG way lately. Just got his self-titled album, and regardless of the mixed reviews, I can't help but love it. He makes lo-fi indie pop that's right up my alley: original but catchy melodies, poppy chord progressions but with regular detours into epic harmonic territory...check his shit out, dude!

Freaks and Geeks - Childish Gambino

Yeah, I now this is "in" right now, don't kill me. But the beat is fuckin great, and Donald Glover is a damn good rapper even if he's being more clever than anything else (Drake comparisons abound). But such gems as "I'm runnin this bitch/you are just a dog walker?" and "Took the 'g' out your waffle/all you got left is your ego?" certainly deserve props. Radicals - Tyler, the Creator

...yeah, this is pt. 2 of a series entitled, "Our Blog Posts EXACTLY What You Expect It To." Say what you will about OFWGKTA and Tyler (musically or ethically) but they're blowing up in a big way...a kid at my school suggested they might be "the Sex Pistols of our generation," and this song sort of hits that particular nail on the head. Plus, it's got all the upper-middle-class white kids (myself included) chanting "KILL PEOPLE, BURN SHIT, FUCK SCHOOL," a sight I'm still trying to wrap my head around.

Forever (feat. Will.I.Am) - Wolfgang Gartner

This track was pretty divisive when it came out. All the EDM purists started calling Wolfgang a sell-out, which is kind of understandable, because fuck Will.I.Am. But then you listen to the track in question: it's accessible but well-made, it's still got that signature Gartner sound (obviously scaled down a bit for pop purposes), and Will.I.Am actually doesn't ruin it! But if you're just not into pop/electro house crossovers, feel free to ignore this one. I just think it deserves mention that someone cooler than David Guetta is getting big names on his shit.

Generation - Skanek

For those of you who hated the above track, this is for you: a healthy serving of some straight up, un-poppy, nasty-ass electro for all the heads out there. Got this from Daftwho?, who post heavy shit like this (plus lots of dirty dubstep jams if that's also yo thang) on the regular. ((WARNING: play this in your car IF AND ONLY IF you are driving in a zone where going 60+ mph is LEGAL))

Louder (Doctor P & Flux Pavilion Remix)

And this one should please both crowds, except for that particular brand of EDM purists who just refuse to enjoy anything that sounds too much like "brostep." But fuck those guys. Genre aside, good music is good music. Also, it's influencing the mainstream in ways you can't even imagine... Anyways, this is actually one of my favorite Flux Pavilion productions: he and the Doctor just OWN that (crucial) balance between awesome, catchy chords and fucked-up, bassy noise. Pop dubstep/brostep at its best.

Light #1 (Take Remix) - Nosaj Thing

This is like if Jupiter remixed Saturn (i.e. it's of planetary proportions). We here at Crustacean Cognition love both of these men very much, being the two giants of the L.A. beat scene that they are, and this track lives up to my expectations. Incredible drum work by Take, as usual...but the synths, the chopping of Nosaj Thing's original elements, and everything else is just as fantastic.

Clockwork (Valerna Remix) - Juelz Santana

Valerna kicks ass. Electro at its finest, such an awesome bass.

Sasha Don't Sleep (Pance Party Remix) - The Dance Party

Takes elements of progressive house (i.e. chords) and electro house (i.e. bass) and fuses them seamlessly into THIS fucking track. Makes me want more Pance Party.

Hardtack (Original Mix) - Pance Party & Valerna

A collab?! Seriously?! FUCK YEAH!! This kills so hard.

Sparc (Original Mix) - ThreeSixty, Jay Ferro

That's right. Mother. Fucking. Techno. No, not "techno" as in "generic term for dance music." Real techno. The cold, ominous, minimal sort of techno with all the weird noises. The kind of techno that people call "too repetetive." Except it's really not, if you give it a chance and listen close enough. Grabbed these last four tracks from Apes With Barrels, who aside from being the foremost authority on hardcore electro bangers, also loooove their techno.

Hole in the Floor of the Plane - The Sparrows

And because this wouldn't be an absurd batch without at least one "WTF" track...this one's a jam by an indie/bluegrass band called The Sparrows. And it's banjo-centric. This is normally Peter's domain, I know, but my friend Marty showed me these guys recently and they're great.

"Sounds of Symmetry" Proton Drive Theme Song - Dntel

Beautiful work from mister Tamborello, as usual, done as a promo for dublab's ongoing fundraiser. If you read this blog and have money (fat chance), you should head over and donate, they do beautiful work over there. But in any case grab this tune. So good.

SHIGETOOOOOOOOOO

Shigeto is a brilliant electronica/indie/beat music producer based out of Brooklyn. To clarify: it's mostly beat stuff, with that downtempo/hip-hop feel, but he's got a very neat sound that sometimes strays out of the hip-hop spectrum. He's a master of soundscapes: bright synths, pretty chords, kick-ass drums, and percussion up the wazoo. But he is undeniably beat-driven. And one hell of a good producer.

He's signed to Ghostly International, a bad-ass label/collective/site that has a lot of amazing artists signed to it...like Gold Panda, who I will post on soon. He (Shigeto) has an album, Full Circle, coming out in a couple of weeks, I am extremely excited and will most definitely purchase it. More info here.

Adrift (Shigeto's Adrift A Dream Remix) - Tycho

First song of his I got. From XLR8R...point made. So beautiful, the beat is stripped down to these minimalist clicks over beautiful synth washes and a simple melody, with a little sub thrown in there for good measure. It struck me because I'd never heard this kind of sound anywhere else.

Spoons (Shigeto Remix) - Shlohmo

This one's from Shlohmo's Camping EP. Whereas the original track basically oscillates between glitch/ambient and gnarly wobble-bass beat music, this one takes those ambient, woozy chords and throws them over a killer beat in the first 30 seconds, then holds off on the wobble bass til later, when it arrives in a more subtle, muted form than in the original. Really tight remix.

Jungle Strings - Shigeto

From his Soundcloud. This starts with pretty much an electro beat, like something you'd hear from SebastiAn. But with intricate percussion & use of white noise, a droning string sample, and some arpeggiated blips in the background. Also it slows down to hip-hop tempo at the end, which is pretty kewl.

Is This All For Real - Shigeto

From a Moodgadget compilation called The Nocturnal Suite. This one's got a plucked guitar sample and vocals (reverbed up the wazoo and faded to the background), both of which mix well with the beat. Great bass, groovy beat, and some FUNKY lead synths. MAN he knows how to make good synth noises.

After The Smoke - Shigeto

From the What We Held On To EP. Amazing song. A neckbreaking beat soaked in distant sidechained chords hits you relentlessly, only occasionally giving you a measure's respite by breaking for a mournful vocal sample. By the end, the chords are everywhere, from high end to low, until you are literally saturated in synths. If you like this song, GET THE EP. I cannot stress this enough. It's not a big file size, it's beautiful music, and most importantly, IT'S FREE, COURTESY OF THE ARTIST. So he wants you to have it!

UK Funky is, as I understand it a particularly fast, drum-driven genre of house music. A lot of the time I find it repetetive, but here are a few select tracks that really got me movin'. Props as usual to Apes With Barrels and XLR8R.

Steam - Sub Swara

BANGER BANGER BANGER. Opens with these intense tribal drums, then drops into a super nasty house groove, complete with squelchy bassline. It even has a dubstep breakdown at one point. This sucker really moves.

I Might Be (Joy Orbison Remix) - Todd Edwards

Joy Orbison is a champion of this whole Funky/post-dubstep/whatever-the-fuck-it-is-they're-calling-it-now sound, and I dig his stuff. This is a really cool track, very chill and deep but with a sub bass that could melt faces, not unlike that Subwave liquid track I posted a while back.

Addicted To You (Lone Remix) - The Count and Sinden

Very housey. This one has a reeeeally cool lead synth line, very 8-bit (and you know how I love my 8-bit)

Cryptic Motion (Mr. Oizo Remix) - Squarepusher

Mr. Oizo, aka the muse of those gentlemen over at Apes With Barrels, has mastered the aesthetic of weird-ass electronica. And yet he never misses a chance to bring the funk, either: chopped up slap bass, computerized vocal samples, and weird little pitch-bent clavichord breaks make this track an awesome little oddity.

Earth King - Newman Wolf

Baths posted this track on his facebook page; it's by a friend of his. Really neat indie/beat music stuff, a lot of the sounds in there remind me of Baths' stuff, actually, specifically "Maximalist," but the expert vocal chopping and drum work reminds me a lot more like Duke Dumont's remix of Lily Allen...this is a really cool track, it's well-structured and awesome. And most importantly, it makes me want to hear more from this guy. Indie/electronica/beat track.

Deadcatclear II (Baths Remix) - Themselves

I know next to nothing about Themselves, but as you're probably aware by now, it wouldn't be our blog if we didn't post a Baths track...so here you go. No shame. Strange vocals, but not in a bad way at all. Great track.

FWUH 16 - Bomb Zombies

Bomb Zombies (best name ever!!) is the EPIC duo of Low End Theory residents Nobody and Nocando: Nobody on the sick beat and pitched-up hook, Nocando killing it on the mic as usual. Their Sincerely Yours EP is out November 9 on Hellfyre Club, Nocando's label. And I cannot freakin' wait. "Fuck what you heard, this is what you need to hear."

Trusss - matthewdavid

matthewdavid, a dublab labrat and founder of the almighty Leaving Records, is the shit. He's certainly at home with the L.A. beatheads, but he has a penchant for fucking with field recordings and tape manipulation as well, so his stuff has this incredible experimental/atmospheric vibe. I love it.

And We Gonna (Samiyam Chopsticks Remix) - Shigeto

Now for a certified JAM: Samiyam remixing Shigeto. Hell fuck yeah. Prepare to drown in heavenly sawtooth synth chords before the kick knocks yr skull in. Awesome percussion, bass, beat...Samiyam is a boss.

Ruby (Live @ Berghain) - Mount Kimbie

I know very little about the UK's Mount Kimbie, except that supposedly they put on one hell of a live show. And this track certainly supports that claim: it's super mellow, intricate, and performed live. I think they're generally described as "post-dubstep" (genre pigeonholing ftw), and you can hear why that is in the beat, but this is pretty damn far from dubstep, sharing more in common with deep house and UK funky in my opinion. But descriptions aside, give it a listen, it's a neat track.

it's been a while since we have done one of these. probably since mid-september... anyway, here is a batch of music i have collected and curated over the past month or so that departs from our usual DnB, Dubstep, Beat music and electro indie side. a bit. There's a zip at the end, so if you feel inundated by links, head for the zippp.

Demon Host - Timber Timbre

Besides their AWESOME name, Timber Timbre have a very cool, sparse, bluesy-folksy-lets-go-roll-in-a-meadow type feel. This is from their self titled album, and is one of my friend's favorites.

King Tut. I don't really know much about them except that they have since broken up. However, their music is awesome. Its like Grizzly Bear plus wayy more post-production processing and more agressive, noodly lines. These two tracks are from their album Chopping Wood and Carrying Water but are not in any way the only types of sounds you will find on that album. Buy it somewhere if you can.

The Whole Game Is Based On Faith - King Tut

Meditative, almost baroque fugue-like banjo bluegrassy folk indieness. LOVE.

THIS reminds me more of our friend Baths than it does of bluegrass. These guys know how to do everything - not only can they produce intricate arcs of banjo plucking, they can chop it up and add samples and stuff and make what you find here. again, LOVE.

Train Song - Feist and Ben Gibbard
This is mostly here because i know El Langosta has a Ben Gibbard fetish and that he would really like this track. I really like it too. Its exactly what you would expect from these two. that is, simple, pretty and soulful. Plus i have a thing for male-female duets (nevermind that there are backup singers)


Honk Town - The Toughcats
I have posted (in a limited way) on these guys before. Anyway, i have a special place in my heart for the toughcats - they hail from an island in maine near where i summer, and they have been becoming more and more and more popular in recent months/years. That just makes me excited. I love these guys, essentially bluegrass folk-rock-ness, but awesome. think more improvised barn dance hall than big bluegrass festival in tennessee.


Iron Horse - These are two epic bluegrass covers (the hell with me and bluegrass?! i don't know) of popular indie/rock songs - the ubiquitous Float On (Modest Mouse) and New Slang (The Shins).
I love these SO MUCH. Get them both.

It's been awhile...MIX TIME

Hey, guys.

This one's for ma buddy Patkins.

He's been going through some personal drama of late, nothing too serious, but enough to stress the guy out, which is not what he needs. I mean, the man is working simultaneously on two degrees, as well as writing for this blog, going to concerts...you know, actually having a life.

So I figured I would make him a mix, seeing as it's been awhile since I've done one for the blog anyways.

The "For Patkins" Support Mix - DJmus ∆

Hardly a perfect mix: a couple fuckups and some embarassingly basic transitions, but undeniably amazing tracks. I'm proud of the selection, especially in the first half. It's fun when you find 4 songs in relatively the same key that all sound AWESOME.

New Gobble Gobble!!

Reeeeally dark shit... metal vocals and a dubstep beat collide violently with the catchy hooks and top-notch noise-pop production we've come to expect from Gobble Gobble. Cecil Frena screams dark, visceral lyrics at you through layers of delay, while 8-bit synths cascade like waterfalls over an understated wobble bass and a crisp 2-step beat, until just when you feel starved for melody he gurgles a wordless hook before crooning in his signature distorted tenor: "move til' you can't feel..."

But to be perfectly honest, this band's music pretty much defies description. So just give it a listen, and be open-minded. Because I will admit that this shit is undeniably weird...

AshTreJinkins & ¢hit$ - The$tomp [REVIEW]

Oh yes, ladies and gents. The time has come. AshTreJinkins, a freaking fantastic 17-year-old beat music producer (previous posts), has released a split beattape, The$tomp, with like-minded producer ¢hit$, who I'm fairly unfamiliar with. But he's also great, the two fit really well with each other, vibe-wise. These guys are NOT amatuers; they're fantastic producers, the both of them, so let me tell you, it is a freakin DEAL that you can go grab this for FREE at their bandcamp. Although you are allowed to pay for the album if you'd like, and I highly suggest you do. These beats are for sure worth some cash. You can listen here if you'd like, however:



REVIEW PORTION:
The tape opens with ¢hit$ on a beat called "Sawdoff," which has some neat, crisp claps and clicks riding over what seems to be a bitcrushed kick drum, all bathed in a gorgeous synth/string sample. Then AshTreJinkins takes the reins on "Gremlins," which makes brilliant use of fat, ominous synths and what sounds like, well, a bunch of gremlins snarling and growling. Really cool beat. Then ¢hit$ is back, holding down the softer, more contemplative end of the tape with "Travaja," before AshTreJinkins comes back in (you can see the pattern here) with the brutally skull-crushing "CaveDwellers," which gains extra points for sampling Monty Python. But I absolutely love the super dark and atmospheric vibe he's got going on his half of the tape. Really top-notch production, you've heard me rant about this kid plenty before. The rest of the tape sees ¢hit$ getting down with some really cool synths on "19," AshTreJinkins moving from a percussion-oriented vibe to yet another incredible beat (all saturated in GORGEOUS ambient synths) on "Symbolic Rainforest," and the two remixing one of each others' tracks. They essentially take the same approach on both ("aSymbolicRecreate" and "Travaja (Jinkins'SourDownfallRmx)," each taking the ambient aspects of the other's original and adding a heavier beat. And both work exceedingly well.

Point is, this is an awesome tape. You should go get it, as a reward to yourself for sitting through my ramblings and ravings.

Baths Kicks Assths

I like how our last two posts have literally followed the same basic format: "oh look, here's some new shit by artists we fucking LOVE and post on waaaaay too much." .....but in all seriousness, this is a song called "Ocean Death," performed live by Baths.

He's at the tail end of a big-ass tour of the US with El Ten Eleven (patkins reviewed such a show here), and this is a brand-new jam, possibly from his next album. He's been saying that it's gonna follow a much darker vibe, which I am super down for if it sounds as awesome as this. You can read an interview with him here, but here's a particular excerpt I liked:

"I have been thinking about 13th Century Europe where the idea of the devil and going to hell were actual truths to these people. It was not the way that that religion is now where you can take it or leave it. In that time period it was an absolute brutal truth, like if I do this certain wrong thing I am going to be condemned to hell forever. The zeitgeist of that time, that crazy fear is really interesting to me, that people lived every day of their lives with something which to me is really terrifying, I think that is a really interesting subject and vibe for music. I want to make music as fierce or creepy as that idea as well as incorporating a lot of ideas of death. But not in the horror of it, like in American horror, but in the more contemplative Japanese outlook on it. It can be a beautiful thing, even the process of it…"

This Batch Makes Very Little Coherent Sense

I've just had some tunes kicking around my head of late, figured I should share em with y'all. Mostly Indie Rock, with a dance jam and some experimental/beat stuff packed in there at the end for good measure.

Like Eating Glass - Bloc Party

Bloc Party are probably the first band I became seriously obsessed with. This is off their stellar debut, Silent Alarm, which should be mandatory to have in your music library. The other albums are good too, but they never really topped this one; they just went in different directions and tried new things, which is totally respectable.

Up - Modern Memory

Freaking obsessed with this band/record. Expect a post in the near future detailing why I am so obsessed with Modern Memory. And their past, and their future, and everything else related to the brothers Faler. But just vibe with this jam in the meantime, and keep your eyes on this blog.

We Laugh Indoors - Death Cab For Cutie

People hate on Death Cab a lot. And while I can see why (cf. the lyrics from Plans...), I can't help but love them. They have an undeniably pop quality to them that I think some people find distasteful, but there really is so much there in the music and lyrics, I dunno. Fuck it, I like em. Though on second thought, the bridge to this song is pretty awkward. They pull that sound off better on the bridge to "Tiny Vessels." (youtube link)

White Winter Hymnal - Fleet Foxes

I most certainly was not into Fleet Foxes back when everybody else was two years ago. That was my Electro/EDM phase, I had other things on my mind. But after hearing an acapella group here utterly KILL this song, I had to go back and see what I was missing. And man, was I missing. Gorgeous lyrics, wonderful songcraft, and vocal harmonies that will lift you high above this plane... Another essential album for y'all's music libraries.

Electric Boogaloo (Hudson Mohawke Remix) - Wiley

Jam Jam Jam. Super awesome synths, very spacey feel, then in come the drums and this shit gets tribal. Fuckin HudMo. What a boss. "Report to the dancefloor, honey..."

Weak Will - [Post-Foetus]

It wouldn't be our blog if we didn't post something related to Will Weisenfeld, aka Baths, aka Geotic, aka the bee's tits. But here's a track from his earlier moniker, [Post-Foetus], from the release The First Will Weisenfeld EP. Warning: EXPERIMENTAL AS HELL. I fucking love it, though. Spoken word lyrics over epic handmade soundscapes, touches of the pop sensibility that we love so much about Baths, not to mention the song is about not being able to talk to someone you love from a distance, who can't relate to that!?
