R.I.P. GOBBLE GOBBLE...LONG LIVE BORN GOLD!!

We regret to inform you that GOBBLE GOBBLE, one of our favorite bands here at Crustacean Cognition, is no more. Kind of.

To quote Gbl hivemind Cecil Frena: "We have been slowly coaxing this caterpillar into a butterfly with our fists. Check it out, girl-- a new face to fit both our past to date and the futuresex we are slowly growing into. Stand before a mirror, hold your palm over your right eye, and repeat Born Gold six times."

So we are now quite pleased to inform you that GOBBLE GOBBLE have been ressurected as BORN GOLD! You can get all the old Gbl releases (for FREE, mind you!) over at their old tumblr, you can get TOUR DATES (!!) at their website, and you can check out this revamp of an old Gbl favorite of mine right here:

Alabaster Bodyworlds - Born Gold

The original is from their first (and only) proper album, Neon Graveyard. While I love the original's melancholy murk and distortion, this version glitters with a bit more hi-fi. It seems to draw primarily from their live performance of the song, or so I gleaned from the last few times I've seen them.

Anyways, go "Like" or "Follow" or "Bookmark" all of the relevant pages at their website, and if you're as die-hard a fan as us, you'll pre-order their debut LP, Bodysongs, on Hovercraft/Crash Symbols. It's looking like 50% classic Gbl and 50% new shit, so I'm super excited (and wondering if the old tracks will come similarly revamped...). Comes out officially on 9/20, though if you pre-order you get the mp3s on 9/9! They're currently out-selling Bon Iver, Washed Out, and Panda Bear, which is pretty fkn boss. Tracklist and Album Art below:

01. Lawn Knives
02. End of Days
03. Decimate Everything
04. Morning Bath
05. Boring Horror
06. Wombstone
07. Wrinklecarver
08. Eat Sun, Son
09. Alabaster Bodyworlds
10. Early Birthday

Pre-order Bodysongs from Insound!!

~

BONUS TRAXX:

That Way - Born Gold

Non-album track! Total jam. Incorporates a lot of house elements, interestingly, and of course it manages to be both creepy and catchy at the same time.

Alabaster Bodyworlds - Gobble Gobble

The original version of the above track, if you're interested.

Keep it weird, yo.

New Skrillex EP Preview

1. First of the Year (Equinox)
2. Ruffneck (Flex)
3. Ruffneck (FULL Flex)
4. Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites (Dirtyphonics Remix)
5. Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites (Phonat Remix)
6. Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites (The Juggernaut Remix)
7. Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites (Kaskade Remix)

Yeah, feel obliged to do this. First original sounds like a carbon copy of his iSquare remix except without all the, well, iSquare; second two tracks sound decent. The remixes, on the other hand, sound frickin boss, and pretty diverse to boot (Phonat and Kaskade?? tiiiiiight). And that Dirtyphonics remix is off the chizzain...Skrilly + DnB/Drumstep has been a long time coming. In fact, you should check out/grab that FACE-SMASHER of a track HERE.

And although I was a bit lackluster in reviewing his new productions just now, I can hardly blame the guy; he lost the hard drives with all of his (probably epic) new material earlier this year, so it looks like he wound up having to start from scratch.

Also, I love that he's badass enough to suggest that you torrent it if you can't buy it...what a G. We will surely aid you faithful readers in that quest when the time is right.

MOAR JAMZ

Shit on my recent listening list. I'm just going to keep doing these until patkins gets off his ass and posts. Enjoy!

Radar Detector - Darwin Deez

I have been getting into Darwin Deez in a BIG way lately. Just got his self-titled album, and regardless of the mixed reviews, I can't help but love it. He makes lo-fi indie pop that's right up my alley: original but catchy melodies, poppy chord progressions but with regular detours into epic harmonic territory...check his shit out, dude!

Freaks and Geeks - Childish Gambino

Yeah, I now this is "in" right now, don't kill me. But the beat is fuckin great, and Donald Glover is a damn good rapper even if he's being more clever than anything else (Drake comparisons abound). But such gems as "I'm runnin this bitch/you are just a dog walker?" and "Took the 'g' out your waffle/all you got left is your ego?" certainly deserve props. Download Childish Gambino's EP for free HERE.

Radicals - Tyler, the Creator

...yeah, this is pt. 2 of a series entitled, "Our Blog Posts EXACTLY What You Expect It To." Say what you will about OFWGKTA and Tyler (musically or ethically) but they're blowing up in a big way...a kid at my school suggested they might be "the Sex Pistols of our generation," and this song sort of hits that particular nail on the head. Plus, it's got all the upper-middle-class white kids (myself included) chanting "KILL PEOPLE, BURN SHIT, FUCK SCHOOL," a sight I'm still trying to wrap my head around.

Forever (feat. Will.I.Am) - Wolfgang Gartner

This track was pretty divisive when it came out. All the EDM purists started calling Wolfgang a sell-out, which is kind of understandable, because fuck Will.I.Am. But then you listen to the track in question: it's accessible but well-made, it's still got that signature Gartner sound (obviously scaled down a bit for pop purposes), and Will.I.Am actually doesn't ruin it! But if you're just not into pop/electro house crossovers, feel free to ignore this one. I just think it deserves mention that someone cooler than David Guetta is getting big names on his shit.

Generation - Skanek

For those of you who hated the above track, this is for you: a healthy serving of some straight up, un-poppy, nasty-ass electro for all the heads out there. Got this from Daftwho?, who post heavy shit like this (plus lots of dirty dubstep jams if that's also yo thang) on the regular. ((WARNING: play this in your car IF AND ONLY IF you are driving in a zone where going 60+ mph is LEGAL))

Louder (Doctor P & Flux Pavilion Remix)

And this one should please both crowds, except for that particular brand of EDM purists who just refuse to enjoy anything that sounds too much like "brostep." But fuck those guys. Genre aside, good music is good music. Also, it's influencing the mainstream in ways you can't even imagine... Anyways, this is actually one of my favorite Flux Pavilion productions: he and the Doctor just OWN that (crucial) balance between awesome, catchy chords and fucked-up, bassy noise. Pop dubstep/brostep at its best.

Hope y'all enjoy! Sorry for the long descriptions, obviously the tracks come first in case you don't want to read my wordvomit. I just like writin and shit.

Lobster out!

BONUS JELLY:
Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima - Krzysztof Penderecki

Penderecki can sound-paint catastrophe, fear, and horror like no other. Tonality's overrated anyways. This one's for the classical heads (I took a Musical Style/History course this past semester, deal), though you might recognize this from "The Shining" and "Children of Men."

Cause I Feel Like It #$

if you haven't inferred from our AWESEOM MIXES, El Langosta (pictured) and I dj.
we will dj your party!

hi there. i am avoiding my homework.

House/Club
Canblaster - Clockworks
SO GOOD. Canblaster is someone to watch. Get this for sure.

Wobble (Original Mix) - Albin Myers
Prog meets fidget house. insane. thanks apes with barrels

Pop Remixes
YEP!

Eh, okay. Nice shotgun sample

Party And Bullshit (In the USA Remix) - Miley Cyrus vs Notorious BIG
GET THIS if you don't have it already. play it at parties, people will be your friend

I've already posted this but think it needs to be posted again - Alex B goes apeshit on Kanye W

These guys, from LA, are pretty much their own genre. Describing Nguzunguzu's sound is about as easy as saying their name (its not). Suffice to say it is clubby, hot, tropical, heavy electro. Its very odd in many ways and you need to be in the mood for it.. but they are fascinating. Watch out for them for SURE (along with Canblaster).

Bonus Tracks
Walking With A Ghost (Tegan And Sara Cover) - The White Stripes (Removed)
Now that they broke up we have to celebrate them!

Avantcore - Busdriver (Removed)
This is mostly here for El Langosta, because we both love indie rap. Busdriver is a member of the Nobody/Nocando cadre. that means its awesome. i mean, the track in this is essentially a piano jig with clever and light lyrics on top. loveeeeeeee

Want a bit of indie soul with your beats? Caught A Ghost is here to help.

Caught A Ghost is a new side project of Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Jesse Nolan, frontman of Red Arrow Messenger (formerly The Cheat), which may or may not still exist. He's also just an all-around awesome guy. But this is no typical singer-songwriter venture. This is some forward-thinking shit, and it's making me really excited.

These guys make dazzling genre experiments that confuse and delight at the same time. Which comes as no surprise to me, seeing as the last time I ran into Jesse Nolan (and Ghost backup vocalist Marushka Mujic) was at L.A. genrefuck/beat scene club Low End Theory (with Take and FlyLo, which we reviewed HERE), and it seems like he's taking his music in a logical direction: there's some blue-eyed, old school soul, there's the solid indie rock chops I remember from his earlier work, but now he's doing some impressive production as well, incorporating elements of dubstep, electro, and beat music into his songs. And it's awesome.

They've got a little 3-song release out (the Cag Mixtape), and each of its tracks are completely original and innovative in their own little way.

"Sleeping At Night" reminds me a bit of Kele's solo stuff/Bloc Party's electronica adventures on Intimacy (cf. the horns on "Mercury").

"Sugar In My Coffee" is what would happen if Free The Robots and Take decided to make some gritty chain-gang-work-song blues. Best song on the tape, the sound they got here is just incredible. Really makes me respect Nolan's production chops.

"Time Go" is like downtempo 90's alt-rock meets ambient electronica textures. Really neat song, another favorite of mine.

The point is, I am mega-pumped for what the future holds for this project. You should really get it on iTunes, it's only $3. And it's not everyday a 3-song EP comes with this diverse and interesting a sound.

i'm so proud it even warranted new album artwork. anyway, i made this mix with my new (as of new years eve) MIDI controller that has been excessively mapped to my preferences. i hope you like the results - i tried to make a mix of just electro bangers, so the first 30 mins are just that. but i couldn't not drop whats in the last few minutes, if you know what i mean (COUGH 1983). enjoy and spread! go forth and prosper!

The Masters At Work

Stray Light (Bastille Remix) - Night Eyes - Free Download by Bastille

Oh yes. The Electro House Pirate Barons of Apes With Barrels, also known as Bastille, have made what I deem to be their best track to date. The intro is pretty simple, but the buildups are freaking cool and the DROPS (both of them)...my god, the drops. They masterfully combine the detuned high synth blips of their beloved Techno and Tech House with a dirty, dubstep-worthy bassline and a smashing Electro House beat. Really detailed, hard-hitting, and a fucking jam.

Hit their Soundcloud for moar freee trax.

Batch of the Absurd

Yeah, this was one of those "god I love these fucking songs...how can I get them all on the blog without cluttering up the main page with a ton of insignificant little posts?" sort of things. So here you go. dadadadadadadadadadadadadada

Light #1 (Take Remix) - Nosaj Thing

This is like if Jupiter remixed Saturn (i.e. it's of planetary proportions). We here at Crustacean Cognition love both of these men very much, being the two giants of the L.A. beat scene that they are, and this track lives up to my expectations. Incredible drum work by Take, as usual...but the synths, the chopping of Nosaj Thing's original elements, and everything else is just as fantastic.

Clockwork (Valerna Remix) - Juelz Santana

Valerna kicks ass. Electro at its finest, such an awesome bass.

Sasha Don't Sleep (Pance Party Remix) - The Dance Party

Takes elements of progressive house (i.e. chords) and electro house (i.e. bass) and fuses them seamlessly into THIS fucking track. Makes me want more Pance Party.

Hardtack (Original Mix) - Pance Party & Valerna

A collab?! Seriously?! FUCK YEAH!! This kills so hard.

Sparc (Original Mix) - ThreeSixty, Jay Ferro

That's right. Mother. Fucking. Techno. No, not "techno" as in "generic term for dance music." Real techno. The cold, ominous, minimal sort of techno with all the weird noises. The kind of techno that people call "too repetetive." Except it's really not, if you give it a chance and listen close enough. Grabbed these last four tracks from Apes With Barrels, who aside from being the foremost authority on hardcore electro bangers, also loooove their techno.

Hole in the Floor of the Plane - The Sparrows

And because this wouldn't be an absurd batch without at least one "WTF" track...this one's a jam by an indie/bluegrass band called The Sparrows. And it's banjo-centric. This is normally Peter's domain, I know, but my friend Marty showed me these guys recently and they're great.

"Sounds of Symmetry" Proton Drive Theme Song - Dntel

Beautiful work from mister Tamborello, as usual, done as a promo for dublab's ongoing fundraiser. If you read this blog and have money (fat chance), you should head over and donate, they do beautiful work over there. But in any case grab this tune. So good.

We hope you enjoy the divers tunes.

Beware the night poodles.

Lobster out.

~ ~ ~

BONUS [zip only]: grab the whole batch and we'll throw in a little minimix that patkins made to help me through a nightmare week. Sure, the support mix I made for him was a real mix, not a 5-minute one, and it had real dance music, not dubstep, but the thought was nice. Just kidding, it's boss. TURN YO SPEAKERS UP

It's been awhile...MIX TIME

Hey, guys.

This one's for ma buddy Patkins.

He's been going through some personal drama of late, nothing too serious, but enough to stress the guy out, which is not what he needs. I mean, the man is working simultaneously on two degrees, as well as writing for this blog, going to concerts...you know, actually having a life.

So I figured I would make him a mix, seeing as it's been awhile since I've done one for the blog anyways.

And besides, what else soothes the soul like hard-hitting Electro House bass?

The "For Patkins" Support Mix - DJmus ∆

Hardly a perfect mix: a couple fuckups and some embarassingly basic transitions, but undeniably amazing tracks. I'm proud of the selection, especially in the first half. It's fun when you find 4 songs in relatively the same key that all sound AWESOME.

[obligatory Apes With Barrels plug. I get most of this stuff from them]

Feel better, buddy.

Tracklist in the comments.

ZEROH RAPS OVER FLYING LOTUS

((look, literally "over" him! heh heh heh...))

Oh lordy this is a trip. Cosmic rhymes over a Cosmogramma beat ("Nose Art"). Trippy as hell but god I love it. 0. kills it. Every time. You should read up on him. The dude's supposedly got a tape coming out in the near future, but until then the world waits with bated breath...

A Post Including, But Not Limited To, Dirty Electro

So after discovering Skrillex (debut EP available for FREE - COP IT) my interest in dirty electro was revitalized and I became inspired to make a post of some of my accumulated tunes.

Skrillex, by the way, is awesome - he reminds me of the Bloody Beetroots et al. in terms of his ferocious use of noise and ripping synths but he takes it to an awesome extreme and its well produced and executed. I'm really excited to see him in August along with Wolfgang Gartner (aka the Second Coming of Christ), Harvard Bass and Valerna at the Avalon.

So fucking epic. The best remix of this I have ever heard.

Yes, his name is Skrillex, And yes he's going to kick your ass with a steel-toed boot with rusty nails poking out of it.

Gets a little wearing after a while but is definitely fun for the first couple minutes. Would be interesting to mix with the original.

Vicious and vivacious from 0:01.

Unfortunately haven't heard anything else out of Loose Cannons yet.. but I like the random intro and the somewhat Miles Dyson-ness of this track.

Because everybody loves the Bloody Beetroots, including me for this track. A bit old, but good.

I said this post included but was NOT LIMITED TO Dirty Electro. So here are two things I have had banging around in my head recently, mostly relating to Top 40 that has been cleverly redone.

Gartner does SoShy so well. Awesome track.

This is just epic. Just. Listen to this. Works better than you think. Just. Ahhh.
(i know, im articulate.)

EDIT:

I do realize that I just posted something that involves ke$ha. In order to redeem my dignity, I present to you the other half of that mashup, quite possibly one of our favorite dance tracks ever. In case you DON'T want a trashed slut babbling over your progressive house.

Various Things to Post (RANDOM BATCH OF AWESOME)

First off, let's start with this new track deadmau5 posted on his soundcloud:

everything you are by fuckmylife

Oh yeah. That's right. No drums, no percussion, nothing but pure unadulterated chord and modular synth heaven. Makes me respect the man more than I already did, because as far as dance producers go, he's by far one of my favorites. He has a reputation for being an enormous tool, and I can see why, but I still respect him because: a) he makes awesome music, b) he actually makes a clear effort to interact with his fans even though he's one of the most popular producers out there, and c) he got his start as an honest-to-god technology geek writing software and introducing recording studios to computers, and I feel like this humbles him somewhat more than the guys who just learned ableton on their laptops and got lucky (though that applies to plenty of producers, good and bad). You can see it in interviews, and in his work, quite honestly; he's all about the music, notsomuch the fame and douchiness that accompanies it.

And besides, he is part of the Holy Trinity of Dance Music, according to the Apes With Barrels crew. And their word is law.

Next is this song, which peter failed to include in his 30's/40's music post but it really belongs there, seeing as it was the Andrews Sisters' biggest hit, if I'm not mistaken. I just know it from Bioshock, though, and lord knows I love my Bioshock.

Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen - The Andrews Sisters
Yeah, I was surprised too when I thought they were singing "My Dear Mister Shane."

And this is a fantastic electro track, a remix of Kavinsky by American DJs The Chaotic Good. Not only is this a quality dance track of brick-shitting proportions (think intense distorted 8-bit chords + vocoders + fat effin bass), I think their name is a reference to Dungeons & Dragons, which gains them a LOT of points in my book. Also from Apes With Barrels; anybody interested in dance music should read that blog, and take sweet sweet advantage of their archives.

Nightfall (The Chaotic Good Remix) - Kavinsky

BONUS: Grand Canyon - Kavinsky
some more Kavinsky because he's awesome (cf. the snythz and drumz)

~ ~ ~

Yeah, that's all for now. Patkins is lazy, but he SHOULD have a post up on some neat submissions we received lately...PEACE

Remix Artist Collective

So I was in my friend's car yesterday, listening to awesome music, when he showed me some tracks by the Remix Artist Collective, specifically their remixes of Bloc Party. I already had one of their tracks (a neat remix of Robyn's "Cobrastyle"), but I knew nothing about them. Well, now that I've utterly raided their site (they give ALL their stuff away for free!), I can safely say that these guys make some of the most fucking awesome remixes I've heard in a while. It all has this very electro feel to it, but they use live instruments in the mix, and they pretty much totally reinvent the songs, rather than just making a track in ableton and using just the vocals. Really great stuff, check it out.
My personal recommendations:

Sleeping Lessons (RAC Mix) - The Shins
God this is amazing...they literally remake the song, and it's just as fucking awesome as the original, which incidentally happens to be one of my favorites. They add this really awesome guitar part, proves my point from earlier that they have real talent.

RAC Vol. 1
With those Bloc Party remixes I mentioned earlier. But it's all good

Nintendo VS Sega EP
BOMB AS FUCK. GET THIS IF NOTHING ELSE.

Again, it's all free on their site, to listen and to download, so go go go go go and appreciate that shiat!!

P.S.
...just go to dublab and download this. now. it's really weird but I fucking love it. It's like psychadelic dubby beat music...with weird-ass vocal samples drowning in reverb...I really like this...
