9/18/11 Wavelength of the Moment: Some Ghettotech

I got this track on XL8R in April, and I rediscovered it latey and have been listening to it a lot. It's a jukey, hyperactive take on a Lil Scrappy track, and it turns out that mid-oughts Atlanta crunk translates pretty well into some double-time dancefloor swag. All hail Kaptain Cadillac.

[Download:] Pumpz - Salva & Vortex
Some shit in a similar vein, courtesy of Friends of Friends jukemaster Salva. Got this at XLR8R as well.

One to Love - Rain Dog

Another XLR8R gem, this time from Rain Dog. Absolutely beautiful track, reminds me of Geotic, but with some chopped-up post-dubstep in the mix. Go pay whatever you want to download his EP, it's friggin gorgeous.

[Download:] Ass-N-Titties - DJ Assault

And here's some OG Ghettotech for yo ass. Detroit dance music in the 90's was a strange and beautiful thing.

As you probably gleaned, the moral of this post is that you should probably read XLR8R. They consistently post the most amazing, diverse, and forward thinking sounds in electronic music today, and we love them here at CC. So go check their site out. SOOOOO much free shit.

9/3/11 Wavelength of the Moment: ¡¡¡CHUPACABRA!!!

Mexicans With Guns is the shiznit. This track goes harder than H.A.M., so to quote Mr. Gonzales himself, "turn your system up and just fucking press play."

It looks like Friends of Friends have come up with a follow-up to their very successful Pop Massacre compilation - Pop Massacre 2. Look for tracks from Mexicans With Guns, Shlohmo, Jonwayne, Salva, eLan and many more (some i don't even know yet!) for just the price of an email.

2/28/11 Wavelength of the Moment: NEW SHLOHMO

Oh yeah. 2011 is getting off to a bangin' start. And I can think of no better way to usher in the first month of spring than a lush (what I did there) new jam from L.A. beat scene stalwart Shlohmo.

Smooth, layered, gorgeous, and soulful. This is a peek at the upcoming Places EP on Friends of Friends, in anticipation of his debut (assuming you don't count 2010's Shlohmoshun Deluxe release) LP, Bad Vibes. Definitely slapping down some cash for those babies.

Do give it a listen, this dude is the whole reason I got into the whole Low End Theory scene in the first place. He's a master of atmospherics, with an incredibly subtle production style that can't be matched. Plus he played all the instruments you're hearing on the above track: guitar, bass, keys...makes me excited for his future. Though his past is definitely worth researching.

Fuck this week. But after this it's spring break, and that means more reliable blogging (from me at least). Sorry for the hiatus, folks.

NEW GROUNDISLAVA HOLY SHEETS

2010 was freaking incredible. Once I decide to get off my lazy ass, patkins and I will probably do a 2010 recap post, reiterating what we loved about it. But since we're already here, why not explain why we are going to love 2011?! Here's a sampler. Read: LANGOSTA IS SO FREAKING PUMPED RIGHT NOW.

If you don't know WEDIDIT stalwart GroundIsLava, get your ass ready for some awesome music. A combination of tripped-out beats, gorgeous chords, and dazzling synths, his productions never fail to blow me away. This EP is no exception, so watch out, because he is gonna blow up this year. Blah blah video-gamey beat music/8-bit electronica blah blah blah. "He's really frickin good" is the point.

Get THIS FREE EP...

...then watch out for his debut LP on Friends of Friends, dropping sometime in April.

Friends of Friends - Pop Massacre

The influential blog Friends of Friends has just released a compilation called Pop Massacre - essentially, they challenged some of the best names in the beat scene (Daedelus, Shlohmo, Dntel, GroundIsLava, Strangeloop, Asura, My Dry Wet Mess... the list goes on!) to remix a pop song. Shlohmo, for example, takes on Soulja Boy; Dntel, Lady GaGa. The result: SEX.

Shlohmo - Camping EP

Shlohmo released the Camping EP on Friends of Friends a few weeks ago, and I just bought it. For those of you who don't read XLR8R, Shlohmo is 20-year-old Los Angelino Henry Laufer, a fellow alumnus of Crossroads School in Santa Monica, and a BEASTLY beat music producer. He also writes for/runs/helped start the LA-based WEDIDIT Collective, an outlet for countless talented "homies" in the experimental beat biz (my most recent favorites being 0. and LandLord).

Effortlessly combining found sounds, 8-bit synths, and fat glitch-meets-dubstep bass, his last two releases, Shlohmoshun Deluxe and the Shlo-Fi EP (which is free, courtesy of Error Broadcast), have garnered a serious following, and lots of blogosphere/Mary Anne Hobbsosphere love. Not bad for a kid two years older than me.

The EP is, suffice to say, beast. His sound has come pretty damn far: tons of percussion and awesome production without sacrificing all the thick low-end we've come to expect from him. Three bomb remixes by Asura, Shigeto, and Baths also on the EP. Get the Baths remix from XLR8R, I fucking love it as well as everything else Baths has been up to. But more on him later...

Here's a jam, Old Shlo, but awesome. He remixes it into "Tomato Smash" on the EP. From Shlomoshun Deluxe:

Tomato Squeeze - Shlohmo

Buy the EP!!!!! ( Bleep // Boomkat )

P.S.
((On a similar note, I'm seeing Baths, along with Daedelus and MatthewDavid, at the Troubadour tonight! This is very very very good. Expect a Baths post after his album comes out July 6th...one of the most inspiring producers of recent months in my opinion))
