2/28/11 Wavelength of the Moment: NEW SHLOHMO

Oh yeah. 2011 is getting off to a bangin' start. And I can think of no better way to usher in the first month of spring than a lush (what I did there) new jam from L.A. beat scene stalwart Shlohmo.

Smooth, layered, gorgeous, and soulful. This is a peek at the upcoming Places EP on Friends of Friends, in anticipation of his debut (assuming you don't count 2010's Shlohmoshun Deluxe release) LP, Bad Vibes. Definitely slapping down some cash for those babies.

Do give it a listen, this dude is the whole reason I got into the whole Low End Theory scene in the first place. He's a master of atmospherics, with an incredibly subtle production style that can't be matched. Plus he played all the instruments you're hearing on the above track: guitar, bass, keys...makes me excited for his future. Though his past is definitely worth researching.

Fuck this week. But after this it's spring break, and that means more reliable blogging (from me at least). Sorry for the hiatus, folks.

2/26/11 Wavelength of the Moment: 0. / Zeroh G7 / Elliot Blaqbird

Zeroh has blessed us with a new incarnation: Elliot Blaqbird. In his own words:
"Three Weeks ago I started recording just about everyday... some joints were on beats I liked, some where on beats I made. Some serious, others comical or satirical, but they're journal entries... experiences to draw reference to when I forget and stray off the path. Enjoy, thanks for listening, peace and light."
It's brilliant. And loopy. And free. Check it out.

Light up, listen, love.

sunkids (teamonhisbaqdoe) - Zeroh ft. jonwayne

He kills, jonwayne likewise. Look the fuck out for these two this year.

thankyouSD - Zeroh

So fucking sick. Funky, chill-ass vibe, lyrical acrobatics galore. Dude is on another level.

calm the mnd - Zeroh

Cool shit.

If these tracks haven't convinced you to grab this free little (33MB) tape, I don't know what will.

But seriously, do it, he's awesome.

Lobster out.

Seeing as we're blogging in small bursts now (more stuff soon...spring break approaches, and what else am I gonna do but listen to music and blog about it), I figured I'd keep up the pattern. Good news, kids:

from the new Ed Banger comp, Let The Children Techno. Good to see them back in action, and even better to see them pulling FlyLo under their wing. If you don't know Ed Banger, you probably know Justice or Mr. Oizo or Uffie, and that should be all I need to say.

Cause I Feel Like It #$

if you haven't inferred from our AWESEOM MIXES, El Langosta (pictured) and I dj.
we will dj your party!

hi there. i am avoiding my homework.

Canblaster - Clockworks
SO GOOD. Canblaster is someone to watch. Get this for sure.

Wobble (Original Mix) - Albin Myers
Prog meets fidget house. insane. thanks apes with barrels

Pop Remixes

Eh, okay. Nice shotgun sample

Party And Bullshit (In the USA Remix) - Miley Cyrus vs Notorious BIG
GET THIS if you don't have it already. play it at parties, people will be your friend

I've already posted this but think it needs to be posted again - Alex B goes apeshit on Kanye W

These guys, from LA, are pretty much their own genre. Describing Nguzunguzu's sound is about as easy as saying their name (its not). Suffice to say it is clubby, hot, tropical, heavy electro. Its very odd in many ways and you need to be in the mood for it.. but they are fascinating. Watch out for them for SURE (along with Canblaster).

Bonus Tracks
Walking With A Ghost (Tegan And Sara Cover) - The White Stripes (Removed)
Now that they broke up we have to celebrate them!

Avantcore - Busdriver (Removed)
This is mostly here for El Langosta, because we both love indie rap. Busdriver is a member of the Nobody/Nocando cadre. that means its awesome. i mean, the track in this is essentially a piano jig with clever and light lyrics on top. loveeeeeeee

Cause I Feel Like It ##

its wintry and gross outside (pic above is my unartistic attempt at the view from my dorm window). Naturally, all i want to do is stay inside, not do homework for my classes later today, play good music and drink tea from a french press... not that i am trying to make myself sound like a hipster. this isn't a tumblr. anyway, this is installation #3 (or ##) of my series of obscenely eclectic posts. Tracks are broken down by category, with zips at both ends for those of you that have trouble finding them.

Beat Music
Thanks, XLR8R!

Indie Rock/Folk
First Aid Kit are a sister-sister folk duo from sweden (why does sweden produce the best folk music ever? cf tallest man on earth). They became quickly popular with their rendition of the Fleet Foxes song Tiger Mountain Peasant song on YouTube, but they are talented far far beyond just a cover. Very talented. And a family band! (+15 patkins points)
Hard Believer - First Aid Kit (Removed)

Akron/Family. I don't know enough about them, besides the fact that they are from NYC/Seattle and are really awesome experimental indie rockers. Well, i guess i know enough. they have a new album released Feb 8th, this track included. Definitely a nice, open, backbeat-heavy rock jam.

Mumford and Sons - Like the Fleet Foxes, but more like rain coming down than flurries swirling outside your window. I think that is a very accurate simile.

For emma. also from their new album.

Dubstep/Electro Coda
Yep. This is absolutely epic. My roomie had no idea what was coming. Shout out to Apes With Barrels. I don't know where they find these things.

Very Caspa-y. Excellently minimal buildup (which would make it really easy to drop into a set, just saying). the rest of the song is straight up caspa. thats the only word i have to describe it.

Langosta shared this with us on Facebook and labelled it "JAM", but failed to share it on the blog. So here it is. Its not dubstep - its electro house. the hook gets you within the first 5 seconds of the song. definitely "JAM".

enjoy this music as much as i have been

superindie: Annabel Lee

Annabel Lee is a small indie folk vocal harmony band from Seattle. One of their members is an acquaintance of mine and as such i happened upon the demo they just put out on their bandcamp. if you know Mountain Man, it is a similar concept but using more instruments and with more clear, definite songwriting. Either way, you are in for a treat. Check them out, show some love for indie bands. Its snowing hard here in Boston (to the extent that something silent like snow can be 'hard') and I couldn't have asked for anything better to listen to today.

Annabel Lee Album Sneak Peek (name your price at Bandcamp)

Daedelus is putting out a new single soon, and put out this TOKiMONSTA remix as a teaser... its really cool. I love TOKi.
