MOAR JAMZ

Shit on my recent listening list. I'm just going to keep doing these until patkins gets off his ass and posts. Enjoy!

Radar Detector - Darwin Deez

I have been getting into Darwin Deez in a BIG way lately. Just got his self-titled album, and regardless of the mixed reviews, I can't help but love it. He makes lo-fi indie pop that's right up my alley: original but catchy melodies, poppy chord progressions but with regular detours into epic harmonic territory...check his shit out, dude!

Freaks and Geeks - Childish Gambino

Yeah, I now this is "in" right now, don't kill me. But the beat is fuckin great, and Donald Glover is a damn good rapper even if he's being more clever than anything else (Drake comparisons abound). But such gems as "I'm runnin this bitch/you are just a dog walker?" and "Took the 'g' out your waffle/all you got left is your ego?" certainly deserve props. Download Childish Gambino's EP for free HERE.

Radicals - Tyler, the Creator

...yeah, this is pt. 2 of a series entitled, "Our Blog Posts EXACTLY What You Expect It To." Say what you will about OFWGKTA and Tyler (musically or ethically) but they're blowing up in a big way...a kid at my school suggested they might be "the Sex Pistols of our generation," and this song sort of hits that particular nail on the head. Plus, it's got all the upper-middle-class white kids (myself included) chanting "KILL PEOPLE, BURN SHIT, FUCK SCHOOL," a sight I'm still trying to wrap my head around.

Forever (feat. Will.I.Am) - Wolfgang Gartner

This track was pretty divisive when it came out. All the EDM purists started calling Wolfgang a sell-out, which is kind of understandable, because fuck Will.I.Am. But then you listen to the track in question: it's accessible but well-made, it's still got that signature Gartner sound (obviously scaled down a bit for pop purposes), and Will.I.Am actually doesn't ruin it! But if you're just not into pop/electro house crossovers, feel free to ignore this one. I just think it deserves mention that someone cooler than David Guetta is getting big names on his shit.

Generation - Skanek

For those of you who hated the above track, this is for you: a healthy serving of some straight up, un-poppy, nasty-ass electro for all the heads out there. Got this from Daftwho?, who post heavy shit like this (plus lots of dirty dubstep jams if that's also yo thang) on the regular. ((WARNING: play this in your car IF AND ONLY IF you are driving in a zone where going 60+ mph is LEGAL))

Louder (Doctor P & Flux Pavilion Remix)

And this one should please both crowds, except for that particular brand of EDM purists who just refuse to enjoy anything that sounds too much like "brostep." But fuck those guys. Genre aside, good music is good music. Also, it's influencing the mainstream in ways you can't even imagine... Anyways, this is actually one of my favorite Flux Pavilion productions: he and the Doctor just OWN that (crucial) balance between awesome, catchy chords and fucked-up, bassy noise. Pop dubstep/brostep at its best.

Hope y'all enjoy! Sorry for the long descriptions, obviously the tracks come first in case you don't want to read my wordvomit. I just like writin and shit.

Lobster out!

BONUS JELLY:
Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima - Krzysztof Penderecki

Penderecki can sound-paint catastrophe, fear, and horror like no other. Tonality's overrated anyways. This one's for the classical heads (I took a Musical Style/History course this past semester, deal), though you might recognize this from "The Shining" and "Children of Men."

Cause I Feel Like It #$

if you haven't inferred from our AWESEOM MIXES, El Langosta (pictured) and I dj.
we will dj your party!

hi there. i am avoiding my homework.

House/Club
Canblaster - Clockworks
SO GOOD. Canblaster is someone to watch. Get this for sure.

Wobble (Original Mix) - Albin Myers
Prog meets fidget house. insane. thanks apes with barrels

Pop Remixes
YEP!

Eh, okay. Nice shotgun sample

Party And Bullshit (In the USA Remix) - Miley Cyrus vs Notorious BIG
GET THIS if you don't have it already. play it at parties, people will be your friend

I've already posted this but think it needs to be posted again - Alex B goes apeshit on Kanye W

These guys, from LA, are pretty much their own genre. Describing Nguzunguzu's sound is about as easy as saying their name (its not). Suffice to say it is clubby, hot, tropical, heavy electro. Its very odd in many ways and you need to be in the mood for it.. but they are fascinating. Watch out for them for SURE (along with Canblaster).

Bonus Tracks
Walking With A Ghost (Tegan And Sara Cover) - The White Stripes (Removed)
Now that they broke up we have to celebrate them!

Avantcore - Busdriver (Removed)
This is mostly here for El Langosta, because we both love indie rap. Busdriver is a member of the Nobody/Nocando cadre. that means its awesome. i mean, the track in this is essentially a piano jig with clever and light lyrics on top. loveeeeeeee

HE'S BACK

"@ZEROHG7 | LIGHT SOURCE | LOVER | PHILOSOPHER | SOUND SHAMAN | BLAQBIRD | W.D.I.C. | N 0. V8 R | EVOLVER | HEALER | TRILL ASS RHYMER"

So proclaims the ressurrected tumblr of legendary Long Beach underground rapper and producer 0., who now appears to go by the name of Zeroh G7. It's relevant because he just released a new (FREE) tape, G7 University, and it does those descriptions justice.

GRAB IT HERE [TL;DR LINK]

Lacing beats by both well-established beat scene names (Flying Lotus, Teebs) and up-and-coming producers (Juj, KNX), Zeroh is absolutely on FIRE here...literally. Full of references to his favorite psychoactive herb, G7 University is Zeroh's most cosmic, intricate effort yet.

His work has expanded brilliantly with regard in detail and scope. These aren't just hip-hop instrumentals: here there be FlyLo jams. That means crazy experimental beat scene shit, and Zeroh rides these waves effortlessly, matching the often uneven beats with equally trippy vocal production techniques and deftly written, agile lyrics. The result is a novel, innovative synthesis of rap and beat, one that maintains a beautiful sense of aesthetic unity. In my opinion, this is the closest thing I've heard to a rap Cosmogramma, excepting its length.

But at the same time as it's big, it's also brilliantly focused: lyrically, Zeroh has always been brilliant. But here I perceive more purpose in his writing, more of a higher mission, if you will (pun semi-intended). He's acquired an eye, an ear, and a tongue for speaking about our generation, and although truly appreciating his wisdom takes some sifting through layers of wordplay, it's an enjoyable quest, high or sober, and the tape lends itself to repeated listens.

That is, however, my only caveat regarding this album: it's an extremely new sound. Spun of both cannabinoid and lyrical magic, it may lose you on the first listen, or even offend you. But keep at it. The dialect may be "intellectual-neo-hippie-with-soul," but the wisdom is universally human. Habituate yourself to the language and sounds, and the knowledge will shine through. This is a beautiful and inspiring work, currently on repeat in my iTunes. But I understand that it may not click with everybody, at least not immediately.

The future is at your fingertips...just click the link.

OH YES BITCHES.

want this man's earlier work? THIS LINK will aid you in your quest.

also, on a less profound but still badass note, wolfgang gartner has some new shit. go get it HERE.

Autumnal Harvest Post

So I'm getting a little tired of taking in so much music and not being able to get it out fast enough. Because of this I have decided to write a MASSIVE post with tons of stuff in it so i can stay away for a while. There are three categories: Indie, Beats, and Mixes. Look for folders at the end of each section to download everything.

INDIE
Postcards From Italy (Beirut Cover) - Florence and the Machine
Self explanatory. I love florence.

Like The Wheel - Tallest Man On Earth

King Of Spain - Tallest Man On Earth
This guy has literally become one of my favorite artists of all time. These songs have so much soul, so much spirit, so much beauty...

The Blues Run The Game (Jackson C. Frank Cover) - Laura Marling

Another great folk song.. Laura Marling rules.

Cold House - Teen Daze

Chillwave meets the beat scene - lovely, delicate arpeggiated synths and atmosphere. perfect homework music...

Minequest Try 03 - Deadmau5

This is a lot like the above, except its Deadmau5. Essentially a re-edit of Everything You Are, i wish this could go on forever...

Scandal At The Parkade - Owen Pallett

Classic Owen Pallett.. sounds like a string quartet sensibilities meet indie lyrics and vox. So good.

Travel Broadens the Mind - Deerhoof

Very interesting Deerhoof. Based on Congolese street music, this song reminds me of some of the beat music we post - complicated rhythm meets deerhoof's bass heavy/high lyrics sound. loovveeeee

Down By The Water - The Decemberists

This is going to come out on the Decemberists' forthcoming album in January.. they have this out for free for the price of my email. Enjoy.

Good Night - Ellul

I don't know anything about this because i found it in a mixtape. However, this is like Owen Pallett + Shitgeto + Teen Daze + awesome. Worth the listen.

South Carolina - Tennis

Okay, i DO know about these guys. Tennis is a husband-wife duo-turned-trio from colorado. They produce really warm, happy, vintage pop-inspired songs that make you just want to dance around with someone you love. Here is a collection of a few of their songs: Tennis.zip
Their album, Cape Dory, comes out January 18.

Gold Panda - Parents

For El Langosta, because he likes Gold Panda.

INDIE FOLDER

BEATS
Mmmm. Beats. This is a mostly Flying Lotus-centered post, but there are some others in here too.

KeepItGoing (feat UGod) - Blu

Flying Lotus produced this track, and it shows. Again, beat producers getting back to their rap track roots... mmm.

Do The Astral Plane (Them Jeans House Remix) - Flying Lotus

THIS IS AWESOME! very well crafted!

Swimming - Mike Bigga

This is another FlyLo produced rap song.. but, do you know that track from anywhere? OH YEAH, THATS CAMERA DAY FROM Pattern + Grid World. What a concept!

Rip - Dorian Concept

..speaking of concepts, here is an awesome tease that got ripped off of dorian concept's myspace. smack in the face, those synths are.
Love Lockdown (Flying Lotus Remix) - Kanye West

Old Flying Lotus. Beat + Autotune + reverb = awesome

PieFace (My Dry Wet Mess Remix) - Flying Lotus

Notable and interesting.

Electro + Lyrics (or, AN EPIC POST)

new album artwork, yo
WHAT? ELECTRO WITH LYRICS? well, okay usually it winds up being rap. and yes, there are many instances of electro with lyrics. i just wanted to find some sort of theme to bind this post together and give me an excuse to post this stuff. so here you go.

THE FUCKING AWESOMEST TRACK EVER. Lyrics from Sofi Needs A Ladder + Deadwolf Gartnermau5's Animal Rights. FUCKING ;LAKDJSF;LAKDJF;LADSKFJ. GET THIS.

Bass Head (King Fantastic Remix) - Bassnectar
What was a pretty ordinary dubstep track becomes a banging, smashing, EPIC ass track when you add profanities and verse. SO GOOD

Forever (Nero Remix) - Drake
Another rap/pop dubstep track, but with the production quality you would expect from Nero. Fat ass bass, a good one to drop in a live set.

Epic shit!

///PatkinS///

ZEROH RAPS OVER FLYING LOTUS

((look, literally "over" him! heh heh heh...))

Oh lordy this is a trip. Cosmic rhymes over a Cosmogramma beat ("Nose Art"). Trippy as hell but god I love it. 0. kills it. Every time. You should read up on him. The dude's supposedly got a tape coming out in the near future, but until then the world waits with bated breath...

∆ CHECK IT ∆

"Respect your deities."

Lobster out.

EDIT: IT IS YOUR DUTY AS AN ELECTRONIC-MUSIC-LOVING HUMAN BEING TO GO HERE. It relates to two things: Wolfgang Gartner and Wolfgang Gartner. SO DO IT

A Post Including, But Not Limited To, Dirty Electro

So after discovering Skrillex (debut EP available for FREE - COP IT) my interest in dirty electro was revitalized and I became inspired to make a post of some of my accumulated tunes.

Skrillex, by the way, is awesome - he reminds me of the Bloody Beetroots et al. in terms of his ferocious use of noise and ripping synths but he takes it to an awesome extreme and its well produced and executed. I'm really excited to see him in August along with Wolfgang Gartner (aka the Second Coming of Christ), Harvard Bass and Valerna at the Avalon.

So fucking epic. The best remix of this I have ever heard.

Yes, his name is Skrillex, And yes he's going to kick your ass with a steel-toed boot with rusty nails poking out of it.

Gets a little wearing after a while but is definitely fun for the first couple minutes. Would be interesting to mix with the original.

Vicious and vivacious from 0:01.

Unfortunately haven't heard anything else out of Loose Cannons yet.. but I like the random intro and the somewhat Miles Dyson-ness of this track.

Because everybody loves the Bloody Beetroots, including me for this track. A bit old, but good.

I said this post included but was NOT LIMITED TO Dirty Electro. So here are two things I have had banging around in my head recently, mostly relating to Top 40 that has been cleverly redone.

Gartner does SoShy so well. Awesome track.

This is just epic. Just. Listen to this. Works better than you think. Just. Ahhh.
(i know, im articulate.)

EDIT:

I do realize that I just posted something that involves ke$ha. In order to redeem my dignity, I present to you the other half of that mashup, quite possibly one of our favorite dance tracks ever. In case you DON'T want a trashed slut babbling over your progressive house.

Another Mix I Made

^ That's some gnarly shit. You know what that bear probably listens to? Bangin-ass House music. Not like his disembodied friend there. He listened to Lady Gaga. I think we can all learn something from this.

The "Untamed Polar Bears" Mix
by DJMUS ∆

1) Don't Let Me Down (David Tort Mix) - Eddie Thoneick feat. Michael Feiner
2) Sweet Disposition (Axwell & Dirty South Remix) - Temper Trap
3) I Stand Alone (Jean Elan Remix) - Voodoo & Serano feat. Plastic Inc.
4) One 2.3 Four (Auditiv Remix) - Martin Solveig
5) Do It (Ian Carey Mix) - Prom feat. Katherine Ellis
6) 3 (Wolfgang Gartner Remix) - Britney Spears
7) Are U Ready? (Laidback Luke Remix) - Joachim Garraud
8) Set Me Free (Aviici Remix) - Phonat

I'm particularly proud of the *EPIC-ASS TRANSITION* about 15 minutes in. You'll know the one. It's like those two buildups were made to be together...
Also, there's one buildup in there that literally just cuts out for four counts. You'll notice. It might even ruin your day. Sorry.

Enjoy!

"Remember how it was with you..."

I was talking with a friend at prom last night, and dance music was brought up. She said that she doesn't love techno, although she does like house. It's the vocals, she said, and the lyrics. I'm inclined to agree.
House vocals get ripped on a lot, but I think they're the shit. ESPECIALLY Progressive House/Trance vocals. Nothing makes me feel the way I do when listening to an ethereal, layered voice singing absurdly dreamy lyrics while accompanied by the most beautiful, synthesized chords imaginable. So here are some Vocal tracks for y'all, mostly progressive with a bit of Electro House in there for kicks.
HUGE shout out to Apes With Barrels, the blog where I got most of this stuff. Those dudes (aka electro house duo Bastille) went to my high school, and their blog is pretty much what got me into EDM (electronic dance music) in the first place. AMAZING archives, they have everything.
They also have a post on vocal tracks, and although I tried not to plagarize it completely, I couldn't avoid posting the first two songs here...they exemplify house vocals.

~ ~ ~

I Remember (Vocal Mix) - Deadmau5 & Kaskade

Probably one of my favorite tracks ever, such gorgeous vocals. You probably have it, but if you're new to house music/EDM in general then GET IT. Deadmau5 is a god among producers, nailing everything from gorgeous Progressive House to heavy-ass bangers. Go buy Random Album Title if you don't have it already, it's worth it (Beatport//iTunes). Kaskade is a beast too, though I know much less of his work.

Move For Me (Extended Mix) - Kaskade & Deadmau5

Love this one too, such great chords and vocals. And the lyrics, of course ("where do we come from/do I know your name?/doesn't really matter/in this life we're all the same"). Don't ask me why the artist names are switched here. I think it's because the mau5 released "I Remember" on Random Album Title, while Kaskade got to have this track on his album, Strobelight Seduction. (btw the vocals on both these tracks are by Haley Gibbey, who has a collab with Kaskade called Summer of Space.)

Out There (Original Mix) - John Dahlback feat. Basto!

Really weird buildup, not gonna lie, but this track DROPS. Gotta love Dahlback, and those vocals..."I need you in my life/I need you in my life..." I like his tracks a lot, it's hard to pin him down with one genre.

Do It (Ian Carey Mix) - PROM feat. Katherine Ellis

LOVE this song (I love em all, in case you haven't noticed). More Electro House, with GLORIOUS vocals. So raw and soulful, definitely contrasts with the more heavily-produced style of the above tracks. Ian Carey is freakin' awesome, another master of genre flexibility (though it's all House, as a rule), definitely do a search for him on AwB.

Day By Day (Vocal Mix) - Paul Anthony & ZZX

Really neat Prog track...the chords shift quickly and in interesting ways, definitely a cool change from the usual Progressive House fare of four bars Cmaj7, four bars Am9, etc (though it's still tried and true). Great vocals, awesome synths.

I Will Be Here (Wolfgang Gartner Remix) - Tiesto & Sneaky Sound System

A good note to end on. More Progressive vocal goodness. Wolfgang Gartner, aside from being a total fucking G, is another one of those producers capable of making a badass track in pretty much every dance genre (Electro, Electro House, Dutch House, Progressive)...he is indeed, as the good chaps at AwB have been propounding for a while now, the Holy Saviour of dance music. Amen.
