Dntel/The One AM Radio/Geotic - The Soft Alarm Tour EP

So there's this electronic music producer named Dntel. Also goes by Jimmy Tamborello. He's half of the legendary Postal Service. He's one of my idols. Read up on him.

Then there's the indie/synthpop outfit known as The One AM Radio. I have been listening to their most recent album, Heaven Is Attached By A Slender Thread, pretty damn obsessively. I'll be writing a review of it at some point, look out for that shit.

There's also this ambient-electronica act called Geotic. It's the ambient side-project of one Will Wiesenfeld, also known as Baths. He's probably my favorite producer of the past year, and he's released every one of his (many) Geotic ventures FOR FREE! So get those.

Anyways, you can imagine why I was bummed when they announced a tour together (The Soft Alarm Tour) and I was unable to attend any of the performances.

BUT my salvation has arrived. In the form of a free EP consisting of these three geniuses remixing and reworking each other's tracks.

As one might imagine, it's really frickin good.

Go get it for the excitingly slight price of an email address!

Stream Thundercat's New Album!

Thundercat has a hell of a resume. He shredded the electric bass on almost every track on Flying Lotus' recent opus Cosmogramma (even singing on one), as well as joining Mr. Ellison onstage at Low End Theory that one time; he's even jammed on a few Erykah Badu albums...and now he's got a solo record, The Golden Age of Apocalypse, coming out via FlyLo's Brainfeeder label, which the soaring flower himself had a hand in producing.

And you can listen to the whole thing below for free. I suggest you do so, this is some genre-bending shit: jazzy, funky, electrified, and soaring far into the future at speeds faster than light itself...

Make sure to cop this album when it drops on August 30th – as a lover of both old-school jazz and all the Brainfeeder/Low End electronic-future-beat-shit, I can safely say that this is shaping up to be a game-changer.

Dem Bastille Boys

Bastille produce bangin'-ass house music. They also look infinitely better in skinny ties and suspenders than you ever will, and while carrying a pooch to boot.

We've been fans of them for some time now, as well as of their incredible EDM blog, Apes With Barrels. I can safely say that I got into electronic music mainly because of their gargantuan archives, which you should probably go raid right now. Seriously, leave this page and go do that.

Nah, but in all seriousness, they've been dozing a bit on the whole blogging thing recently. But not without good reason: they've been playing mad shows in the L.A. club scene (including one last night, I believe), as well as releasing a few new jams.

Who needs to wait for an official release? Clubs want this track now, and Bastille have done them an impeccable favor with a tasty edit of this surely-already-baller disco house track. VOTE FOR IT ON HYPEM (it's currently #12)!! [download...right-click/save-as]

Bumpin - Free Download in Description by Bastille
Original. And man, is it good. They pick a perfect sample, and turn it into an unstoppable dancefloor weapon: funky, catchy, and dancey. Really impressive work.

Grab the whole Bumpin EP for free HERE!

Go "Become A Fan" of them on the Bookface or whatevr.

Then reap the bounty of their incredible dance music/electronica archives at Apes With Barrels.

FLASH BANG GRENADA

Flash Bang Grenada = Nocando + Busdriver

If you're sleepin, these guys are arguably at the forefront of the Los Angeles avant-rap scene. Nocando is the Low End Theory resident MC, and Busdriver's been doing his (weird/brilliant/hyper-eloquent) thing for years now.

They've got an album, 10 Haters, which drops on August 23rd via Nocando's Hellfyre Club. And it's got a guest list that rivals Dark Twisted Fantasy's in its breadth (and pure, unadulterated swag). For example, this jam's on a Nosaj Thing beat:

And here's a track with Nocando's Hellfyre cohort, Open Mike Eagle:

And then, if you're willing to swap websites for a second, they've even got a jam featuring none other than Del Tha Funkee Homosapien (who KILLS his verse), over some Shlohmo shit. You can stream it HERE.

You can download two tracks for free HERE (click the little 'down' arrows)

Fuck the time-space continuum.

BONUS: the official, Busdriver-penned press quote announcing their inception:

"The evening has imploded on itself. And there you are fending against rabid conversationalists and an unmarked decibel that has torn into your very being. Your significant other's sweaty lower back is clinging to the lacquer brassieres of the morally bankrupt. What was your wallet is now a mound of putty with a hot coal burning at its center. How did this happen? Why is the emergency exit a hulking neon-lined vagina daring you to pass through it? And how did the DJ download your most cherished memories onto his Serato set-up, then blend them seamlessly into a Glitch Mob outtake? Flash Bang Grenada is how."

.............word.

Review: Satin Panthers EP [Hudson Mohawke]

Warp catalogue number WAP313: Hudson Mohawke's smashing Satin Panthers EP. Opening with the shimmering arpeggiated 7th chords of Octan, Hudson Mohawke opens the sequined curtains on his tiny treasure. The next four tracks of the five track ep all have a different flavor from each other, but retain HudMo's characteristic style: head cocking-ly odd, but body movingly catchy. Thunder Bay, the swagged-out second track, is built around a driving trombone-like bassline that feels like a convoy of humvees charging along at 80 miles an hour. Next is Cbat, described by one of our friends as 'strangely odd and surprisingly heavy'; opening with a  flourish a brass and strings, the track drops off a precipice into a cavernous, bassy kick and an enigmatic melody. All Your Love is a densely layered cake of synthtastic goodness, and Thank You wraps up the whole package in a grandiose finish of gated block chords. A one of a kind listen for 2011.

OH LOOK A MIXTAPE

art by patkins
Ladies and gentlemen, a mix tape celebrating our summer listening. Consisting mostly of tracks from this year, but not without a forward-thinking perspective; 2011 ain't dead yet, and its future is looking good...

... from the bleeding edge of progressive electronic music, deep cuts from your favorite crustacean blog.

A Tank Full of Lobsters.zip

* track * liszt *

Pillz (Jonwayne's Drum Circle) - Gucci Mane
Summer jam. IZ YOU ROLLIN?!?!?

Wake Ups - Salva
Funky, borderline Musak synth lines with a meaty kick drive forward until the chopped and screwed dance party begins.

VHS Nite (Starkey Remix) - BD1989
Its nighttime in a futuristic city from 30 years ago. And then the wobble HITS YOU IN THE FACE. One of our summer jams.

Sangria Spin Cycles - Flying Lotus
This slight rarity is my favorite Flying Lotus beat, hands down. Absolutely awesome.

Marriage (Baths Remix) - Gold Panda
Oh look, the other producer that I've been utterly nuts for lately. One of his most beautiful remixes, with sonics ranging from experimental scraping samples, to techno-esque blips and clicks, to those signature gorgeous piano chords.

Daughter - Magic Man
indie synth pop with an excellent bass hook and undeniable summer aesthetic.

Places - Shlohmo
One of the most inspiring producers of the past few years for me. He's taking his sound in a beautiful direction, and Bad Vibes is probably gonna wind up being my album of the year...even though I've only heard three tracks from it.

Panorama (feat. Jake Weary) - Groundislava
in my heart there is a panorama view. one of the best lyrical beat music tracks i know.

Leaving Home - Lapti x Jonwayne
More jonwayne? Whatever, this track was an instant favorite as soon as I heard it: a killer future-hop groove by Lapti, a brutal verse by the wayniac, and even some goddamn blues harmonica. SWAG

MothaLuva (I'm Stoopid) - Zeroh
This man has a poetic skill I've never seen the likes of before, EVER. He blurs words together in the most brilliant ways.

What You Need - The Weeknd
These guys have blown up somewhat of late. Some of the sexiest, darkest, most forward-thinking sounds I've heard this year. Get ready for Thursday...

Like You Mean It - Matthewdavid
We post music of all sorts on this blog, but if you find yourself liking all the really out-there shit we post, you need to listen to matthewdavid. He just nails this epic synthesis of fat, neck-snapping beats and blissed-out, experimental sonics.

Never Never - SBTRKT
I actually just discovered SBTRKT, and I am in love. His recent self-titled album takes an amalgam of UK dancefloor beats and effortlessly melds them with these incredibly soulful vocals (usually courtesy of Sampha). The result? Well-written, dancefloor-ready songs.

Other Side of Backwater - Ryan York
From his Leaving Records release, Zipperlegs. Asura has been one of my favorite producers for a while now, and this track is no exception. Bathe in these beautiful ambient vibes. My 2011 chillout track, for sure.

Marvin's Room (Shlohmo's Thru tha Floor Remix) - Drake
I'm not so sure i'm CRAZY about Shlohmo's newer, more reverb-drenched style, but this track kills. The percussion, the lyrics, its all so perfectly balanced in this heart-rending package. Even if you're perfectly happy it makes you wish you weren't. Powerful stuff.

The Matrix - Bassnectar
We drop BASS IN YOUR FACE. Blowin up the place blowin blowin up the place.

Glow - Mono/Poly
Anther summer jam. CRANK DAT BASS

R.I.P. GOBBLE GOBBLE...LONG LIVE BORN GOLD!!

We regret to inform you that GOBBLE GOBBLE, one of our favorite bands here at Crustacean Cognition, is no more. Kind of.

To quote Gbl hivemind Cecil Frena: "We have been slowly coaxing this caterpillar into a butterfly with our fists. Check it out, girl-- a new face to fit both our past to date and the futuresex we are slowly growing into. Stand before a mirror, hold your palm over your right eye, and repeat Born Gold six times."

So we are now quite pleased to inform you that GOBBLE GOBBLE have been ressurected as BORN GOLD! You can get all the old Gbl releases (for FREE, mind you!) over at their old tumblr, you can get TOUR DATES (!!) at their website, and you can check out this revamp of an old Gbl favorite of mine right here:

Alabaster Bodyworlds - Born Gold

The original is from their first (and only) proper album, Neon Graveyard. While I love the original's melancholy murk and distortion, this version glitters with a bit more hi-fi. It seems to draw primarily from their live performance of the song, or so I gleaned from the last few times I've seen them.

Anyways, go "Like" or "Follow" or "Bookmark" all of the relevant pages at their website, and if you're as die-hard a fan as us, you'll pre-order their debut LP, Bodysongs, on Hovercraft/Crash Symbols. It's looking like 50% classic Gbl and 50% new shit, so I'm super excited (and wondering if the old tracks will come similarly revamped...). Comes out officially on 9/20, though if you pre-order you get the mp3s on 9/9! They're currently out-selling Bon Iver, Washed Out, and Panda Bear, which is pretty fkn boss. Tracklist and Album Art below:

01. Lawn Knives
02. End of Days
03. Decimate Everything
04. Morning Bath
05. Boring Horror
06. Wombstone
07. Wrinklecarver
08. Eat Sun, Son
09. Alabaster Bodyworlds
10. Early Birthday

Pre-order Bodysongs from Insound!!

~

BONUS TRAXX:

That Way - Born Gold

Non-album track! Total jam. Incorporates a lot of house elements, interestingly, and of course it manages to be both creepy and catchy at the same time.

Alabaster Bodyworlds - Gobble Gobble

The original version of the above track, if you're interested.

Keep it weird, yo.

NEW JAWN WAYNE TAPE BRUH

Everything this man puts out is quality. Except maybe his album artwork.

I'm kidding. Kinda.

But actually, jonwayne has pretty much become my favorite producer and live act (beat-scene-wise) of the year. This dude deserves to blow up, and from the looks of his still-hot debut, Bowser (which we got a press link for hyping!!), he very well may be about to. He performed (officially and unofficially) at almost every Low End I went to this summer, even filling in for resident MC Nocando one night.

Anyways, he just released a new tape. It's unsurprisingly awesome. Here's what he had to say about it in the pleasantly extensive liner notes:

"I want you to have this. This download contains songs that I wanted to give you but either due to poor timing, politics or my sad attempt at quality control, never did...I give them for free now because they are no longer relevant to what I'm trying to do at the moment. I am working on different sounds and trying to go to different places than the sounds and places that are presented, here. So take them."

This is free, and comes with our highest recommendations, so you have no excuses. He even raps on a couple of tracks, and that variety of wayniac joint is damn rare...

~ Jonwayne - Thanks, Bro ~

A Track Y'all Need

Black Capricorn Day (Slum Village Remix ft. J Dilla) - Jamiroquai

This is one of the smoothest, funkiest beats ever crafted by man. So who's surprised that Dilla was behind it all?

Been trying to find an mp3 of this for YEARS. Not even joking.

Get this track. If you're reading this blog, you won't regret it.
