10/31/11 Wavelength of the Moment: Nu Shlohmo Videoh

Shlohmo - Trapped In A Burning House (Official Video)

We have finally been granted an official video from one of our favorite albums of the year, Bad Vibes: a haunted, hallucinatory, Halloween-ready trip through the woods, directed and edited by the man himself: Henry Laufer, alias Shlohmo.

An unsettling enigma from beginning to end (not unlike its musical source material), this video does an excellent job of showcasing Laufer's tact in visual storytelling: nothing is explicated, no answers await the perplexed viewer when they reach the end of this dark journey – only elusive images of windows and silhouettes, like distant memories briefly flitting in and out of our consciousness as we are dragged through the dim forest...

You gotta check out Bad Vibes if you haven't heard it yet. Shlohmo's making some really beautiful sounds right now, and we can't wait for what comes next (dance music, apparently).

Go iTunes that shit.

Lobster out.

Cook, Clean, Pay the Rent (New House Version) - Teebs

New Teebs track being passed around in honor of his upcoming release on Brainfeeder, Collections 01. On some real ethereal shit, gotta love what this dude does with samples.

And on a less exciting note, it's likely that I'll be reducing my posting to more like once a week from now until the new year...unfortunately (for you dear readers), I've been cast in a production of "Hamlet," and as one can imagine, rehearsing for that is gonna take up a shitton of my (previously free) time. So hopefully patkins will be able to pick up my copious slack. Though it's also possible that I'll still manage to post more than him.

The Weeknd - Initiation

Really trip new joint from The Weeknd. "The Morning" this ain't.

Initiation - The Weeknd

Hot on the heels of Thursday's brilliant experimentations with genre and sonic atmosphere, it looks like Abel Tesfaye & co. are looking ever forward. There's shit going down here production-wise that blows my mind.

And yet, miraculously, the song itself still manages to give you just "What You Need" (sorry) – a dark, driving, chopped up beat; an eerie vocal melody, distorted and pitch-shifted to hell and back; then, of course, there's Tesfaye's trademark lyrical menace.

The content is familiar, to say the least: some poor girl gets sucked into a dark underground world of sex, drugs, and fame, where power games and depraved hedonism are the norm. But with every track the Weeknd put out, the menace of Tesfaye's lyrics seems to be reflected more and more in the sonic atmosphere of the songs themselves, and I'll be bold to say that this might be the most beautifully paranoid and dramatic track they've put out so far. You actually feel scared listening to it, and I feel that most music doesn't do that nearly enough nowadays.

Keep your eyes on the OVOXO, kids. Toronto's doing seriously big things right now, and Drake's new album has the Weekend all over it.

Go get Thursday and House of Balloons for FREE. Best decision you'll make today.

Lobster out.

~ . ~ . ~ . ~ . B O N U S . S W A G . ~ . ~ . ~ . ~

Beautiful collab from two UK electronica legends, Burial and Massive Attack (pre-order the vinyl HERE because there will be no digital release), slated for an October 17th release. Found this over at Live For The Funk.

Sky Raper (Shlohmo Remix) - Comfort Fit

An old Shlohmo track I dug up, show the boy some love and go buy Bad Vibes (which I'll be reviewing shortly)

Nope - CBG (Chill Black Guys)

And finally, on an entirely different note, some swagged-out L.A. shit I found over at WEDIDIT. For anyone who would prefer the party in this video over one of the Weeknd's typical jaunts.

FLASH BANG GRENADA

Flash Bang Grenada = Nocando + Busdriver

If you're sleepin, these guys are arguably at the forefront of the Los Angeles avant-rap scene. Nocando is the Low End Theory resident MC, and Busdriver's been doing his (weird/brilliant/hyper-eloquent) thing for years now.

They've got an album, 10 Haters, which drops on August 23rd via Nocando's Hellfyre Club. And it's got a guest list that rivals Dark Twisted Fantasy's in its breadth (and pure, unadulterated swag). For example, this jam's on a Nosaj Thing beat:

And here's a track with Nocando's Hellfyre cohort, Open Mike Eagle:

And then, if you're willing to swap websites for a second, they've even got a jam featuring none other than Del Tha Funkee Homosapien (who KILLS his verse), over some Shlohmo shit. You can stream it HERE.

You can download two tracks for free HERE (click the little 'down' arrows)

Fuck the time-space continuum.

Lobster out.

~ ~ ~

BONUS: the official, Busdriver-penned press quote announcing their inception:

"The evening has imploded on itself. And there you are fending against rabid conversationalists and an unmarked decibel that has torn into your very being. Your significant other's sweaty lower back is clinging to the lacquer brassieres of the morally bankrupt. What was your wallet is now a mound of putty with a hot coal burning at its center. How did this happen? Why is the emergency exit a hulking neon-lined vagina daring you to pass through it? And how did the DJ download your most cherished memories onto his Serato set-up, then blend them seamlessly into a Glitch Mob outtake? Flash Bang Grenada is how."

.............word.

OH LOOK A MIXTAPE

art by patkins
Ladies and gentlemen, a mix tape celebrating our summer listening. Consisting mostly of tracks from this year, but not without a forward-thinking perspective; 2011 ain't dead yet, and its future is looking good...

... from the bleeding edge of progressive electronic music, deep cuts from your favorite crustacean blog.

A Tank Full of Lobsters.zip

* track * liszt *

Pillz (Jonwayne's Drum Circle) - Gucci Mane
Summer jam. IZ YOU ROLLIN?!?!?

Wake Ups - Salva
Funky, borderline Musak synth lines with a meaty kick drive forward until the chopped and screwed dance party begins.

VHS Nite (Starkey Remix) - BD1989
Its nighttime in a futuristic city from 30 years ago. And then the wobble HITS YOU IN THE FACE. One of our summer jams.

Sangria Spin Cycles - Flying Lotus
This slight rarity is my favorite Flying Lotus beat, hands down. Absolutely awesome.

Marriage (Baths Remix) - Gold Panda
Oh look, the other producer that I've been utterly nuts for lately. One of his most beautiful remixes, with sonics ranging from experimental scraping samples, to techno-esque blips and clicks, to those signature gorgeous piano chords.

Daughter - Magic Man
indie synth pop with an excellent bass hook and undeniable summer aesthetic.

Places - Shlohmo
One of the most inspiring producers of the past few years for me. He's taking his sound in a beautiful direction, and Bad Vibes is probably gonna wind up being my album of the year...even though I've only heard three tracks from it.

Panorama (feat. Jake Weary) - Groundislava
in my heart there is a panorama view. one of the best lyrical beat music tracks i know.

Leaving Home - Lapti x Jonwayne
More jonwayne? Whatever, this track was an instant favorite as soon as I heard it: a killer future-hop groove by Lapti, a brutal verse by the wayniac, and even some goddamn blues harmonica. SWAG

MothaLuva (I'm Stoopid) - Zeroh
This man has a poetic skill I've never seen the likes of before, EVER. He blurs words together in the most brilliant ways.

What You Need - The Weeknd
These guys have blown up somewhat of late. Some of the sexiest, darkest, most forward-thinking sounds I've heard this year. Get ready for Thursday...

Like You Mean It - Matthewdavid
We post music of all sorts on this blog, but if you find yourself liking all the really out-there shit we post, you need to listen to matthewdavid. He just nails this epic synthesis of fat, neck-snapping beats and blissed-out, experimental sonics.

Never Never - SBTRKT
I actually just discovered SBTRKT, and I am in love. His recent self-titled album takes an amalgam of UK dancefloor beats and effortlessly melds them with these incredibly soulful vocals (usually courtesy of Sampha). The result? Well-written, dancefloor-ready songs.

Other Side of Backwater - Ryan York
From his Leaving Records release, Zipperlegs. Asura has been one of my favorite producers for a while now, and this track is no exception. Bathe in these beautiful ambient vibes. My 2011 chillout track, for sure.

Marvin's Room (Shlohmo's Thru tha Floor Remix) - Drake
I'm not so sure i'm CRAZY about Shlohmo's newer, more reverb-drenched style, but this track kills. The percussion, the lyrics, its all so perfectly balanced in this heart-rending package. Even if you're perfectly happy it makes you wish you weren't. Powerful stuff.

The Matrix - Bassnectar
We drop BASS IN YOUR FACE. Blowin up the place blowin blowin up the place.

Glow - Mono/Poly
Anther summer jam. CRANK DAT BASS

THIS BLOG AIN'T DYING ON MY WATCH

Yeah, I know. We suck. I was just on break for two weeks and didn't post shit (though to be fair I was sick and had slow internets). Patkins is currently on break, and although he's been doing better than me lately in terms of posting, he's also nowhere to be found. So now that I'm back at school, my illness has actually gotten worse, which means I have time...and good internet...and not much else to do. Reading for class? Pshaw.

These are things that you should download without hesitation. Their creators have given them away for free, so you should take advantage of these legal gifts. All fantastic.

Collection of mainstream rap remixes by LA beathead jonwayne, who's a dude to look out for this year. The rappers he chose are pretty much the polar opposites of blogosphere favorites OFWGKTA, seeing as they all mention Gucci at least once, I think, but jonwayne knows how to tailor his production to the individual rapper in every case, and the results run the gamut from ridiculous swagger (cf. his take on Gucci Mane's "My Chain") to sinister minimalist grooves (cf. his take on Drake's "Over"). The download includes some brief-but-on-point musings on remixing, as well as a bonus track with verses by the young wayniac himself, and he is not to be missed in that field either:

what's in a number anyways, except the data?
I'm tired of this life, been playin it since the beta,
I've found every glitch, I've found every niche that I belong to...

...get this.

Shlohmo posted this tape to his facebook page the other day. It's also been tweeted by Drake, who hails from the same city (Toronto) as Future-R&B producer/singer/songwriter(s?) The Weeknd. Dunno much about him/them, seeing as his/their tumblr is mostly just filled with tracks and black-and-white photos of chicks (mostly unclothed ones). But that makes perfect sense: this tape is a boner jam masterwork. It's R&B at heart, but the sonics are equal parts dubstep, hip-hop, electro, chillwave, and Low End Theory...hence why I dubbed it "Future" RnB, a label I've heard used only once before, regarding LandLord. The Weeknd is just as worthy of it, as you can tell from the following examples:

The Weeknd - High For This by The_Weeknd

The Weeknd - The Morning by The_Weeknd

...get this tape. Never heard anything quite like it...and it's damn cool.

3) Shlohmo - Places (Chopped And Screwed Remix)
Another gift from Shlohmo. This time actually made by him, in celebration of the explosive success of his recently-released EP, Places. Incredibly smooth sounds, all self-produced, no samples. This is a remix of the title track that feels like its been submerged in molasses, but it's still the shit. You can grab the original track at Pitchfork for a free taste of the EP, which you can (and should...it's cheap) buy HERE via iTunes.

Basically, if you possess the mere capacity to download these gems you should. They're all fantastic. And if you don't, this past hour and a half has been wasted. Godspeed.

Lobster out.

2/28/11 Wavelength of the Moment: NEW SHLOHMO

Oh yeah. 2011 is getting off to a bangin' start. And I can think of no better way to usher in the first month of spring than a lush (what I did there) new jam from L.A. beat scene stalwart Shlohmo.

Smooth, layered, gorgeous, and soulful. This is a peek at the upcoming Places EP on Friends of Friends, in anticipation of his debut (assuming you don't count 2010's Shlohmoshun Deluxe release) LP, Bad Vibes. Definitely slapping down some cash for those babies.

Do give it a listen, this dude is the whole reason I got into the whole Low End Theory scene in the first place. He's a master of atmospherics, with an incredibly subtle production style that can't be matched. Plus he played all the instruments you're hearing on the above track: guitar, bass, keys...makes me excited for his future. Though his past is definitely worth researching.

Fuck this week. But after this it's spring break, and that means more reliable blogging (from me at least). Sorry for the hiatus, folks.

Friends of Friends - Pop Massacre

The influential blog Friends of Friends has just released a compilation called Pop Massacre - essentially, they challenged some of the best names in the beat scene (Daedelus, Shlohmo, Dntel, GroundIsLava, Strangeloop, Asura, My Dry Wet Mess... the list goes on!) to remix a pop song. Shlohmo, for example, takes on Soulja Boy; Dntel, Lady GaGa. The result: SEX.

Los Angeles, St. Paul, London. Beats. CC's 100th Post

If you pay much attention, you can feel the beat [scene exploding]. Here is a new Shlohmo track, plus some stuff from up and coming acts/people you probably didn't know about... enjoy! I know El Langosta will.

Feels like you are in a cave, dripping with water, with an indie band at the very back of it playing. One of CC's favorite indie bands, I might add. Ethereal processing and shlohmo's characteristic staccato synth lines... awesome.

I don't know anything about this guy (mostly because i failed to do any research), but this is really cool. Awesome percussion and groove, with 'motivational' samples throughout... really cool. I play this a lot.

This guy is signed to Ghostly International Records (Gold Panda, Shigeto, Mux Mool).. so you know he keeps good company. He is relatively unknown (a recent addition to the label), but his Shigeto/Mike Slott-like atmospherics sound pretty nice.

Another up-and comer.. Dibiase is from LA as well (El Langosta posted video of him spinning with Zeroh a few posts back). This track is very rap track-y.. in fact, i think he may have even played it in that set i parenthetically mentioned. Anyway, worth checking out.

This guy is from London. He's awesome. Besides the fact that anything with the word 'fox' in its title makes me happy, Fantastic Mr. Fox makes more forward things (think Flying Lotus' Do The Astral Plane more than, say, Matthewdavid or Shigeto). Anyway, i think this is a bunch of clips off of one of his singles.. i really can't find much from him. It's all buried in shit related to some stupid movie...

Everything collected in a folder: Beats + Hobbits

love,

Further proof that 8 Bit lives, and that so does Lord of the Rings. lol.

SHIGETOOOOOOOOOO

Shigeto is a brilliant electronica/indie/beat music producer based out of Brooklyn. To clarify: it's mostly beat stuff, with that downtempo/hip-hop feel, but he's got a very neat sound that sometimes strays out of the hip-hop spectrum. He's a master of soundscapes: bright synths, pretty chords, kick-ass drums, and percussion up the wazoo. But he is undeniably beat-driven. And one hell of a good producer.

He's signed to Ghostly International, a bad-ass label/collective/site that has a lot of amazing artists signed to it...like Gold Panda, who I will post on soon. He (Shigeto) has an album, Full Circle, coming out in a couple of weeks, I am extremely excited and will most definitely purchase it. More info here.

~ d ~ a ~ s ~ ~ t ~ u ~ n ~ e ~ s ~

Adrift (Shigeto's Adrift A Dream Remix) - Tycho

First song of his I got. From XLR8R...point made. So beautiful, the beat is stripped down to these minimalist clicks over beautiful synth washes and a simple melody, with a little sub thrown in there for good measure. It struck me because I'd never heard this kind of sound anywhere else.

Spoons (Shigeto Remix) - Shlohmo

This one's from Shlohmo's Camping EP. Whereas the original track basically oscillates between glitch/ambient and gnarly wobble-bass beat music, this one takes those ambient, woozy chords and throws them over a killer beat in the first 30 seconds, then holds off on the wobble bass til later, when it arrives in a more subtle, muted form than in the original. Really tight remix.

Jungle Strings - Shigeto

From his Soundcloud. This starts with pretty much an electro beat, like something you'd hear from SebastiAn. But with intricate percussion & use of white noise, a droning string sample, and some arpeggiated blips in the background. Also it slows down to hip-hop tempo at the end, which is pretty kewl.

Is This All For Real - Shigeto

From a Moodgadget compilation called The Nocturnal Suite. This one's got a plucked guitar sample and vocals (reverbed up the wazoo and faded to the background), both of which mix well with the beat. Great bass, groovy beat, and some FUNKY lead synths. MAN he knows how to make good synth noises.

After The Smoke - Shigeto

From the What We Held On To EP. Amazing song. A neckbreaking beat soaked in distant sidechained chords hits you relentlessly, only occasionally giving you a measure's respite by breaking for a mournful vocal sample. By the end, the chords are everywhere, from high end to low, until you are literally saturated in synths. If you like this song, GET THE EP. I cannot stress this enough. It's not a big file size, it's beautiful music, and most importantly, IT'S FREE, COURTESY OF THE ARTIST. So he wants you to have it!

[Go get. No excuses.]

Lobster out.

~ ~ ~

BONUS: new groundislava shit. he's half of LandLord, who we posted on here. this track was originally a remix but I like it a lot more without the vocals; this dude is a fantasic producer in his own right, and the rappers on the original suck. So cop it. Now.

Flawed Fortress (I bet I do remix instrumental) by Groundislava

You can grab the actual remix (with vocals) over at WEDIDIT.

10/1/10 Wavelength of the Moment: Shlo-Fi EP

Beauty comes with a fat flippin bassline. Who knew?

Ghost pt. 2 by Error Broadcast

Doesn't hurt that you can nab an entire album of this shit (the Shlo-Fi EP) for free over at Error Broadcast. And I seriously suggest you do. In my opinion it showcases Shlohmo at his best, with its perfect balance of the beautiful atmospherics and heavy beats we've come to expect from young Monsieur Laufer. He's been moving more in the atmospheric direction of late, and I love it. We posted on him here.

~ ~ ~

Also, any being participant in experience of the world who happens to live in or near Los Angeles should attend this event. Low End Theory, that's all I have to say.

Lobster out. Some real posts to follow.

Shlohmo - Camping EP

Shlohmo released the Camping EP on Friends of Friends a few weeks ago, and I just bought it. For those of you who don't read XLR8R, Shlohmo is 20-year-old Los Angelino Henry Laufer, a fellow alumnus of Crossroads School in Santa Monica, and a BEASTLY beat music producer. He also writes for/runs/helped start the LA-based WEDIDIT Collective, an outlet for countless talented "homies" in the experimental beat biz (my most recent favorites being 0. and LandLord).

Effortlessly combining found sounds, 8-bit synths, and fat glitch-meets-dubstep bass, his last two releases, Shlohmoshun Deluxe and the Shlo-Fi EP (which is free, courtesy of Error Broadcast), have garnered a serious following, and lots of blogosphere/Mary Anne Hobbsosphere love. Not bad for a kid two years older than me.

The EP is, suffice to say, beast. His sound has come pretty damn far: tons of percussion and awesome production without sacrificing all the thick low-end we've come to expect from him. Three bomb remixes by Asura, Shigeto, and Baths also on the EP. Get the Baths remix from XLR8R, I fucking love it as well as everything else Baths has been up to. But more on him later...

Here's a jam, Old Shlo, but awesome. He remixes it into "Tomato Smash" on the EP. From Shlomoshun Deluxe:

Tomato Squeeze - Shlohmo

Buy the EP!!!!! ( Bleep // Boomkat )

~ ~ ~

P.S.
((On a similar note, I'm seeing Baths, along with Daedelus and MatthewDavid, at the Troubadour tonight! This is very very very good. Expect a Baths post after his album comes out July 6th...one of the most inspiring producers of recent months in my opinion))
