Low End Theory Podcast 20: D-Styles and TOKiMONSTA

You, if you are reading this blog, probably know about Low End Theory, the wednesday night club night at the Airliner in LA. Low End is pretty much universally acknowledged as the epicenter of the beat music scene and forward-thinking electronic music in general. And, if you know low end theory, you know that every so often, they put out a podcast. This is the closest you can come to immersing yourself in the very special Low End aesthetic without being there yourself on a packed, sweaty, bass-y, glorious wednesday night. the only thing missing is the tremendous array of subs... unless you have a tremendous array of subs to bump this shit on.

Podcast number 20: D-Styles and TOKiMONSTA. D-Styles' set takes up the majority of the podcast, and he frickin ROCKS this. The beats are choice of choice, including some Odd Future joints that he takes and drops in with Gucci Mane a capellas and all sorts of other things. Mono/Poly's in there, TOKi is in there, all manner of wubs and womps and booms.... D-Styles put together a woofer-rattling set that is pretty much mindblowing. TOKiMONSTA's set is shorter, but still packs a pretty serious punch. Somewhat more laid-back, TOKi's set includes (obviously) a lot of her own beats, which lends it a pretty specific sound thats hard to describe but complements D-Styles' set very nicely.

The best part? ITS FREE, guys! Check the link below. Let D-Styles and TOKi blow your mind. Use good headphones or speakers, and let 'er rip.

Return to the Interstellar Plane

Hello out there! Here i am, floating back from the depths of space to make my return to the blog. I've missed you, and i've been listening to lotsa thangs. Heres a dump of tracks for.. well.. listening. Look for the zip, and a special video gift at the end...

Session Cats - Flying Lotus

From the 2006 demo tape, super hip-hoppy and dilla-y (?). Comin out of nowhere, FlyLo

Party Animal - Hudson Mohawke
NEW HUDSON MOHAWKE. HudMo gives Gucci Mane a whole new context with this lovely little party starter. This is from Pleasure Principle, a limited vinyl-only release with a handful of pop remixes. If you can get your hands on it, I highly suggest you do.

Latenight - TOKiMONSTA
From Bedtime Lullabies, came out in 2008. If you can tell me in the comments which more recent song samples this one, i'll give you a prize....

Safari Disco Club - Yelle
You gotta love the intro to this song... and the whole song. Even though i can't quite understand what Yelle is saying (read: its in french), i'm taken away by the synth dance pop.

Hairy Candy - Tobacco
Tobacco is one member of Black Moth Super Rainbow, an all-analog psychedelic group. They remind me a little of the rolling stones, but even more synths... glorious

Forever Heavy - Black Moth Super Rainbow
I mentioned these guys above. Look at their name. You know you have to hear this.

That Girl (Salva Remix) - Pharell Ft. Snoop Dogg
Salva gives the treatment. Somewhat minimal but as such super clean. Salva does some really great shit with his percussion in this track.

Transmission - Terracotta Blue
Submitted to us! Pretty neat, especially the out-of-time sounds towards the end. Its like beat music meets chillwave.

Hot N Cold (Yelle Remix) - Katy Perry
DANSE DANSE DANSE DANSE

Cruel - St. Vincent
On a different note - some new St. Vincent. If you don't know St. Vincent, you should definitely check her out - there is some beautiful musicmaking going on here.

Dat Bass #1

i love numbering posts. especially in this instance... bass. Bass is almost like a religion. You have your places of worship (anywhere with serious bass cannons) and you have those that preach (whoever is playing the music). You have your different religions, or ways of accessing it (beat music, dubstep, rock n roll, hip hop, whatever), you have your icons (the bass clef, subwoofer), and you have the essence of community - take Low End Theory as an example. You even have your agnostics/atheists/nonbelievers (like my mom), that refuse to listen to loud bass. See? Its like a religion.

When playing his huge set at Sasquatch this year, Bassnectar's speaker system cut out to just his monitors. There was obviously much booing and upset at the outage, but he urged us to pray to the Bass Gods instead. You could tell the crowd took it to heart, and they must have heard the prayers cause that shit was MASSIVE. Extended cheesy metaphors aside, many of the tracks posted to blog are posted with particularly notable basslines. The Dat Bass series is a place for these tracks. This is obviously not everything, which is why they are numbered...

Lucid Waking - TOKiMONSTA
Oh man...DAT BASS

Teenage Crimes (Trumpdisco Remix) - Andrian Lux (dubstep)
You think you know how this track's gonna go, all pretty n shit. You even get an indication when dat bass sneaks in. But then....
DAT BASS

Daughter - Magic Man
If you don't know Magic Man, and you like indie synth pop, then you really should. They go to my school (although i didn't know that till i already liked them), and they write really pretty music like this track. And of course...
DAT (catchy) BASS

A Coney Island (Of The Mind) - Ages
Theres a reason we've posted this before. The most calming shit ever. DAT BASS, its like its massaging your mind. This is definitely a stoner jam. Also, check out the rest of Ages' album Failures, its really good.

Line To Dot - TOKiMONSTA
i included this partially because it starts the same as the previous track - same key, same opening decending perfect fourth. Its great in its own right though, mostly due to DAT BASS

Don't Play No Game I Can't Win [Feat. Santigold] (Edit) - The Beastie Boys
Don't Play No Game I Can't Win (Major Lazer Beastie Remix Edition) - The Beastie Boys
Don't Play No Game I Can't Win (SebastiAn Remix) - The Beastie Boys
The original edit delivers DAT BASS with an awesome, reggae bassline, and is one of my favorite cuts from the Beastie Boys new album. Then Major Lazer does a moombahton flip of that shit (complete with airhorn), and its EVEN DANCIER than the original. And then SebastiaAn gives a big FUCK YOU with a gnarly french guitar synth. PS DAT BASS

Space Attack - Doshy
Remember Doshy? 8-bit dusbtep? Yeah. this shit whomps with DAT BASS

She's Deep - D33J
D33J. The newest [i think?] member of our favorite underground los angeles beat collective (WEDIDIT). D33J kills, in the most subtle ways possible. Play this on a proper system or in good headphones, when you are ready to slow jam on a cloud. Yeah. And then download everything he's done, you can find it on the Collective's site. DAT MAD CHILL BASS

Exactly what it looks like it would be. Bump it.

superindie: Annabel Lee

Annabel Lee is a small indie folk vocal harmony band from Seattle. One of their members is an acquaintance of mine and as such i happened upon the demo they just put out on their bandcamp. if you know Mountain Man, it is a similar concept but using more instruments and with more clear, definite songwriting. Either way, you are in for a treat. Check them out, show some love for indie bands. Its snowing hard here in Boston (to the extent that something silent like snow can be 'hard') and I couldn't have asked for anything better to listen to today.

Annabel Lee Album Sneak Peek (name your price at Bandcamp)

BONUS:
Daedelus is putting out a new single soon, and put out this TOKiMONSTA remix as a teaser... its really cool. I love TOKi.

Cause I Feel Like It #@

yep, its time for another of these. This one is a bit less crazy and more towards the normal side of music. i hope. I've included more indie alt type stuff because that has really been what i've been into lately. hope its a nice change of pace. there is a zip file at the bottom with everything.

Far Closer (TOKiMONSTA Remix) - Andreya Triana
Not her usual type of song. More chilled out and less like the sound of a audio cabinet getting smashed. I like this a lot. It has a very nice, almost fidgety bass line. :)

Always (Prefuse 73 Remix) - Junip

Firework (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs Remix) - Katy Perry
GET THIS. This is awesome - he puts in the chorus, makes you think its just another remix, and then drops in a FAT ASS TEED bass line. get this. get it. i don't care who you are.

Rox In The Box - The Decemberists
Just.. so awesome.

Qui Dorm, Només Somia - Deerhoof
This is a wonderful, off-kilter jam from Deerhoof's newest album Deerhoof Vs Evil. Notice that the tempo goes through different feels before it finally settles.. part of their charm is their absolute gift for polyrhythm. This is going to be one of my albums of the year. Also, hopefully Langosta will translate the latin...

Still Sound (Teen Daze Remix) - Toro Y Moi
If your life needs chillwave versions of dancing hipster songs (see previous post)

I'm Not For You - Good Old War
I have been living with these guys and with this song for the past week and a half now. please listen. simon and garfunkel meets fleet foxes meets singer songwriter.

Half Moon - Iron & Wine
From their new album

Who Knows Who Cares - Local Natives
another band i have been living with. this is an excellent, excellent song. listen to it.

Cause I Feel Like It @ - zipped

Africa (Original Mix) - The Goonies (awesome tech house with heavy, hollow bass... mmm)

My Neck My Back (Shlohmo Remix) - Khia (el langosta gave me this... epic epic epic remix)

Alpenglow - TOKiMONSTA, Lunice and Swede:art (don't know who Swede:art is, but this is really great)

Admit Defeat - Daedelus (very interesting, from a newer EP)

NOT IN ZIP: Pretty Boy Swag (Shlohmo Remix) - Soulja Boy (the GREATEST remix off of Pop Massacre.. you need to listen to this, no matter who you are.)

3x gbl gbl + beats + awesome bonus

STOP. NO. CALM DOWN. this is NOT turning into a hipster photo blog. its still a music blog run by two dudes with awkward sensibilities. i just couldn't find anything to put up to catch your eye so i gave you a pic of mine. anyway, heres some stuff fo choo. the three gobble gobble tracks are all different.. just goes to show that they do all sorts of stuff. (if you haven't figured that out yet.. well.. you haven't been paying much attention to them)

Hey, in place of a third track, how about their entire discography? (yeah, that's right. they put it online, for free, by choice. they're that awesome. go check it out) -El Langosta

Rabbits - Betas (note that 'betas' is an anagram of 'beats'....lol. i like it though)

Garden (Jesse Ross Remix) - TEED (a teed remix? hmmm. interesting)

this is what precipitated this post.. this is really cool. preserves the original feel of the song while brightening it up a bit. Remix Artist Collective is something you should really check out if you enjoy indie music, electronica, and/or indie electronica. which should be all of you. (langosta, they have bloc party and kele remixes too..)

enjoy the end of your november
