I stumbled across this guy a couple days ago. he considers himself a beat music artist (think 0., Shlohmo, et al.) and i agree but this album has a very different, interesting and lighter vibe to it than some of the stuff over at WEDIDIT. Check him out. all his stuff is posted for free on his site.
El lobster invited me to collab with him on his blog and bring in some of my own tastes (he calls me the other half - of DJMUS. im *, hes ∆. or you could say hes the indie and im the afterthought. whatever strikes your fancy).
this is excellent, because i love collab-ing with this guy. so anyway, im going to do my best to add to the medley and expand the sphere of possible musing.
IM EXCITED
first up: four tracks, all sort of along the same tune but each good, stylistically independent and kind of a takeoff.
Shlohmo released the Camping EP on Friends of Friends a few weeks ago, and I just bought it. For those of you who don't read XLR8R, Shlohmo is 20-year-old Los Angelino Henry Laufer, a fellow alumnus of Crossroads School in Santa Monica, and a BEASTLY beat music producer. He also writes for/runs/helped start the LA-based WEDIDIT Collective, an outlet for countless talented "homies" in the experimental beat biz (my most recent favorites being 0. and LandLord).
Effortlessly combining found sounds, 8-bit synths, and fat glitch-meets-dubstep bass, his last two releases, Shlohmoshun Deluxe and the Shlo-Fi EP (which is free, courtesy of Error Broadcast), have garnered a serious following, and lots of blogosphere/Mary Anne Hobbsosphere love. Not bad for a kid two years older than me.
The EP is, suffice to say, beast. His sound has come pretty damn far: tons of percussion and awesome production without sacrificing all the thick low-end we've come to expect from him. Three bomb remixes by Asura, Shigeto, and Baths also on the EP. Get the Baths remix from XLR8R, I fucking love it as well as everything else Baths has been up to. But more on him later...

You heard the man. The Prophet Zachariah of The Boy And Colours, a new and beastly music/film blog run by a friend of mine, has posted about Tame Impala, a freakin' GRAND psychadelic indie rock band. Amazing production quality on their new album InnerSpeaker, but apparently minimal overdubbing, they just get an incredibly thick sound with effects and equipment. Buy their album, you won't regret it. See the other post for more info/review.

ON TO THE REAL STORY TODAY, FOLKS:
This EP was posted about two and a half months ago at the WEDIDIT Collective (arguably one of the most "with it" places on the interwebs), and I've returned to it regularly since then. LandLord is a collab between GroundIsLava, a badass producer and WEDIDIT homie, and Jake Weary (credited here as just "Weary," I think) who I have yet to research but I promise a post at some point. As far as I can tell, GroundIsLava produces and Weary sings, but don't quote me on that.
Anyway, some of my favorite beat music jams are vocal tracks (RobertaFlack by Flying Lotus, Ooops by Hudson Mohawke [a more mainstream song than most beat music but similar vibe to LandLord] and everything 0. does), so to hear these guys on this EP combining all the glitchy, hip-hoppy production of the beat music movement with really killer, soulful vocals, really makes me happy about music nowadays. These guys have said that "future r&b" is pretty much what they're going for here, and I think they NAIL it.
My personal favorite track. Great synths, thick beat, and AWESOME vocal production (the same can be said for pretty much the whole album). PLUS it comes with a catchy chorus, guilt-free! "I'm so down for you, down, til the ceiling's the ground..."
The other tracks on here are great too. "Animal" is fierce and ominous, another killer chorus with nasty-ass vocals. "The Upset" has this awesome 8-bit feel over a stuttering beat and bassline, and these wobbly square synths that these guys seem to love so much. And there's instrumentals too, for those of you who like your boom-bap without too much vocal saturation ("Airport Security Sabbatical" and "Bluetooh Narcotics"), though I'm all for it.
P.S. All Songs Considered has an awesome series called "You've Never Heard....[album name]?" where they ask young interns to review classic albums. Pretty neat to hear fresh perspectives. God I love NPR. Check it.
The Long Lost is L.A. experimental beat-god (and Victorian Era enthusiast) Daedelus aka Alfred Darlington and his wife, Laura Darlington, who you may recognize from one or two Flying Lotus tracks (Infinitum and Table Tennis, I believe) that she sang on. Together they make romantic indie-pop jams, COMPLETELY on another level from the usual Daedelus, but still with the really high-quality production you'd expect from him. Gonna buy their album as soon as I buy the next three on my list (Plastic Beach, Moments. In the meantime, I'm listening to these:
-Sibilance - The Long Lost(right-click/save as) If you've ever taken a Latin poetry class, your ear has probably been trained to detect alliteration as much as mine. That having been said, let's just say the title plays a lot into this song, in a clever kind of way. Cool song, very math-y, and in a good way. Nice vocal counterpoint on Daedelus' point as well, love what he's singing.
-Woebegone (Flying Lotus' Luckiest Charm) - The Long Lost(right-click/save as) A gem of a remix from the ever-reliable Flying Lotus, this track was actually recommended to me by Daedelus himself when I chatted with him briefly at a show last week. That's what inspired me to check out the Long Lost in the first place. Great Bossa Nova feel to this one.
-Woebegone (Fly Lo's Like Woe) - The Long Lost(right-click/save as) Hey, another Flying Lotus remix! The last one was more chill, but this one is way more funky and typical Flylo. Those synths are identical to the thick-as-fuck ones he used in Computer Being (on Cosmogramma). Good stuff!!

So I was in my friend's car yesterday, listening to awesome music, when he showed me some tracks by the Remix Artist Collective, specifically their remixes of Bloc Party. I already had one of their tracks (a neat remix of Robyn's "Cobrastyle"), but I knew nothing about them. Well, now that I've utterly raided their site (they give ALL their stuff away for free!), I can safely say that these guys make some of the most fucking awesome remixes I've heard in a while. It all has this very electro feel to it, but they use live instruments in the mix, and they pretty much totally reinvent the songs, rather than just making a track in ableton and using just the vocals. Really great stuff, check it out. My personal recommendations:
Sleeping Lessons (RAC Mix) - The Shins God this is amazing...they literally remake the song, and it's just as fucking awesome as the original, which incidentally happens to be one of my favorites. They add this really awesome guitar part, proves my point from earlier that they have real talent.
RAC Vol. 1 With those Bloc Party remixes I mentioned earlier. But it's all good
Again, it's all free on their site, to listen and to download, so go go go go go and appreciate that shiat!!
P.S. ...just go to dublab and download this. now. it's really weird but I fucking love it. It's like psychadelic dubby beat music...with weird-ass vocal samples drowning in reverb...I really like this...
